Papa Jack 86 Posted June 28, 2011 Most guy's don't go to Doctor's. I went a few years ago to my family Doctor & he said my wieght was fine because I did not have anything else wrong. My wife was hoping he would put me on a diet. I was told to start walking. (yea right.) Then this year got a new Doctor. My first visit was a blood work & meet & greet meeting. He told me "When You come back we are going to do something about that wieght." Now this time I relized I was in trouble. Stuff was starting to bother me & I was ready. I was excited when I went back 3 weeks later. I got a regular man's physical & my wieght was 290. He didn't say anything about my wieght! WTF! I asked him about it & getting on a program & was told "You know what to do, just eat right. No need to throw your money away for some one who will tell you the samething." He's a great doctor but I guess he just doesn't know. But now I have found this after seeing the Sleeve on Dr. OZ. So things work out. How has your Doctor's attitude been? Good? or uninformed? I will not see him until Jan 2012. I hope to be well on my way to my new life.
Caitlyn_Cat 7 Posted June 28, 2011 I have a great PCP who was immediately supportive when I told her I was interested in bariatric surgery. She's been one of my main cheerleaders, and each time I go in (for whatever reason) she always makes the effort to complement me on my progress. Not all docs are as up to speed, though. Maybe yours just hasn't had enough exposure to how successful the surgeries can be. You might just be the one to show him! Best wishes.
Tiffykins 673 Posted June 28, 2011 As sexist as this sounds, I'm not trying to come off that way. But, overweight/obese men are not typically targeted like overweight/obese women. I know my guy friends have dealt with the same issues, but their wives get the 3rd degree about losing weight. All of my doctors have instructed me that I need to lose weight since I was 16, but my male counterparts were never told to lose weight. I remember when I had knee surgery at 16, my medical report back in '93 from the ortho doc said "a 16 yr old, white, overly-nourished female presented with ___________ (symptoms)" I was only 160lbs back then. My parents were counseled on getting me on a strict diet and exercise regimen before and after surgery. Least to say, I ballooned up even more. My PCM here is very pro-WLS and has been extremely supportive throughout my journey. He never hesitated or squawked at my request for a bariatric referral. AwesomeSleeve 5 Posted June 28, 2011 My PCP is super supportive. After a bad experience with a wls I was very discouraged and had given up. On my visit with her this past November she told me if I wanted to give it another try, she knew of a surgeon that I would not be disappointed with. With reservation I decided to go for it. I'm scheduled for surgery in a few weeks. I can't thank my PCP enough.
wishes 125 Posted June 28, 2011 My PCP has always been really supportive of me trying to lose weight, and she has watched me try diet after diet after diet. And when I broached the subject about WLS, she was very supportive then too. I love my PCP. I am so sad that I am going to be losing her when I move.
SleeveGirl-TX 183 Posted June 28, 2011 MY PCP wasn't all that supportive. She doesn't "believe" that WLS works, etc etc. But she said she'd sign whatever I needed because I "met the criteria". She was negative the whole time, but I got what I needed from her and I have an appointment with a new PCP who has a couple of other WLS patients and I am told she doesn't have a problem. We'll see, but I've decided that if a service provider is not 100% on my side and have my back, I'm not paying for their services anymore. Period.

Women are Judged more, but they also are catty with each other. Just watch Survivor. It can be 2 guys & 4 women left & a guy will win because the women can't seem to work together. anonynurse 13 Posted June 28, 2011 My PCP is awesome. Just saw her today in fact and told her about my revision from Lap Band to sleeve. She was supportive when I had the band put in and is supportive now that I have been sleeved. But she never once told me to lose weight, even when I was near 300 lbs at 5'2 and 3/4". Lanette 124 Posted June 29, 2011 Mine was supportive, but VERY uninformed about the sleeve. Best I can remember, they had never even heard of it. Thankfully, I had done a ton of research and was able to tell them all about it. After that, they were onboard and very helpful through the approval process. Maddie 9 Posted June 29, 2011 My PCP has been like my biggest cheerleader. Every time I go in for a visit, he goes on and on about how well it's working. He is the one who recommended my bariatric surgeon, who I adore.
