I still have not got my surgery date yet, but I was wondering if anyone has any adverse side effects? And how much time did you have to take off of work once you had the surgery?

Depends on what you mean by "adverse" effects. Nearly everyone feels pretty crappy after the surgery with some pain and lethargy. Part of this can be chalked up to having surgery in general as it is pretty traumatic on the body. The rest can be because of the effects of the sleeve. You can get temperature sensitivity, nausea, bad taste in the mouth, and bad breath along with a host of other minor complains, most pass within a few weeks to a few months.

Hi Kelly,

I haven't had my surgery yet, I'm scheduled for 8/9/11, but I plan on taking 2 weeks off to just be home and lay around recovering. My return to work date is 8/25/11 because that's when school starts. (I'm a teacher). I've seen on this forum where folks go back to work after 10 days and some wait longer than 2 weeks. I guess it depends on your job, how quickly your body recovers, and how much time you can really be off work.

Hope this helps.

My surgery is July 12 and I told my boss that I would return to teaching on August 1 (almost 3 weeks). I should be able to go back quicker as I tend to bounce back from surgery quickly, but wanted to give myself that much time.

I'm 6 days out. I've had general fatigue and a little incision pain, not a huge deal. I've had no problem getting fluids in. My biggest problem has been muscle pain under my largest incision. I don't know if they cut through that muscle or if it's just from them yanking stuff around in there or what, but it hurts like absolute hell to get sit up, sit down, lay down, etc. I'm blaming my personal trainer for giving me abs in the first freaking place ;)

I own the company and we all work at home, so it's not been a big deal, I was fully expecting to work more than I have though. I am a go-get-it type of person and it's killing me. Luckily my team is on top if it. and handling clients and stuff. I told them I'm off most of this week too.

The most comfortable spot in my house for me right now is my stupid office chair, but I just can't do much work, so tired and I freaking hurt when I move LOL

I had surgery 6/27 and I was so bored at home that I went in to the office for a 1/2 day on day 5! I have had -0- complications unless you count two days of (way TMI) very loud liquid bowels that had me scared to death to go more than 15 ft from a toilet, lol. That kept me from going in on day 4 for a 1/2 day which I was kinda' planning. Desk job with 2 assistants, plus with the long holiday weekend I knew I could recover.

I have no problems getting and keeping my liquids in and am successfully eating pureed and some soft foods (cottage cheese, thin shaved lunch meat) so I think maybe I am an exception to the norm.

I was mentally prepared for complications, even to the point of taking out additional short term disability insurance in case of severe complications that would keep me from working for a few months. I scoured the boards and purchased everything I read that sounded helpful: gasX (never used as hospital wouldn't allow me to self-medicate) heating pad (never opened) etc.

My motto was prepare for the worse, hope for the best!

Thank you everyone,

You have certainly eased my nerves. I have received my surgery date and it is July 18th, now I have to just get through the 2 week liquid diet.

Thanks to all that have responded.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
