New to the site and 3 1/2 weeks post-op

I’ve been reading this site for 3 ½ months now. I have been so inspired by everyone’s story. Thank you all. It made my journey so much easier.

My story is not that different from any one elses. I’ve been overweight most (if not all) of my life. I can’t remember being a normal healthy weight. I’ve tried so many diets and had some success and, you guessed it, I gained it all back plus some.

I started thinking about VSG last October…I seriously started thinking about it this March. I hosted a wedding shower for a friend of mine. Once I saw the pictures, I was devastated. How in the world had I gotten that big? I made up my mind then. I have to do something drastic to get healthy. I was headed to an early grave.

I attended a Weight Loss Seminar and when I heard my options, I was sold on the sleeve. I did some research. I found this site. I looked at all the good and the bad about the surgery. My mind was made up. I talked to my immediate family and they were surprisingly very supportive. Not that I didn't think they would be, but I really thought I would have to talk at least one of them into it. I love my family!

Luckily, my insurance does pay for the procedure. I only needed to prove I had attempted a weight loss program for 6 months (which my latest attempt was WW for 9 months last year) and get a psych eval. Both…done!!

It’s now a little more than 3 months later and I’m sleeved! For 3 ½ weeks now I‘ve been on my WL journey.

I had no problems with the surgery. No complications. I never got sick…thank goodness!! (They did keep me an extra night in the hospital because of unusually high CO2 level in my blood.) Other than that, I’m doing great. I’ve lost 18 lbs. since surgery and I lost 11.8 lbs. on the pre-op diet.

It all happened so fast for me. I wake up every morning and wonder, wow, where the time go. I feel like I just started this yesterday. And it’s done. I’m still in aw.

Now I hit the hard part. Getting off an excess 130 lbs. Wish me luck.

Tina

Hello and welcome Tina!!!:D :D I'm from Sugar Land!! Congrats on your sleeve surgery and weight loss. My sister/bestie were sleeved on 5/13/11 by the same surgeon, same day, same everything!! I love my sleeve!! I had no complications either and am now on solid foods. I only eat about a 1/4 - 1/2 cup of anything I eat. I did buy myself a candle warmer so that my food can stay warm while I take "forever" to eat. So far I think I've lost around 45 lbs and I could not be happier. :) :) :) Anyway . . . welcome and keep us posted on your progress. Take care!

Hi Tina! Welcome to this board and congratulations on having the procedure done! Yes, there are some very amazing, wonderful people on this board. It is an incredibly supportive community. I've also just been sleeved three weeks this coming Monday. I also can't believe I did it!!!! I am looking forward thought to getting past this phase of mushies and then soft foods where everything tastes kind strange... and mostly tiring! :-) I feel very encourged by all the people here. Glad you're here! Looking forward to reading more about your progress!

Hi Tina,

My name is Michelle. I just signed onto the program today. I just like you have the exact same story. I saw a photo my neice sent of me on her horse...poor horse...now I understand why he could not wait to get home and get me off. So, I to have decided to move forward with the sleeve. Talked with my MD and she has signed me up for the class...based on your sharing I am guessing the phsyc eval will be next. I am glad to hear your happy. Saw your progres...looks like your doing great!! I am hoping this is the right choice. Seems like the safest and less evasive way to go. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
