Feels like there is an alien in my stomach..my tummy doesn't like protein shakes

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to get down a Protein Shake and with every tiny sip my stomach is protesting..gurgle, pain, nausea. I REALLY want to get something in me besides Water today. I feel terribly weak. BTW I'm 8 days post op.

I am not crazy about Protein Shakes, but the Atkins vanilla ready to drink was not too sweet or too strong of a Protein flavor. They are great to grab out of the fridge if you don't have time to prepare or eat before you leave to go somewhere. I hope things get easier for soon!

Boy, I remember that feeling...

I was never really able to do the Protein liquids and I really suffered through the first 2 weeks. What I am about to say may be against your doctors advice, so take it with a grain of salt. I started drinking full-sugar gatorade after the first week. I liked the change in taste and my body was desperate for some nutrients / electrolytes. You really don't want to get dehydrated. I had to dilute it a little becuase the flavor was too strong. If you rehydrate yourself, you may find it easier to try Protein again. In the meantime: popsicles, gatorade, Soup, Decaf tea, anything that you can get down that will give you some nutrition. If you think you may be getting dehydrated, you might want to try pedialyte popsicles. They have salt and electrolytes.

Good luck and hang in there - it really does get better!!

Are you allowed chicken or beef broth at this point? If so, sometimes a hot liquid will help. If you can have yogurt, that seemed to go down well also. I bought Carb-Master Yogurt (Kroger or Fred Meyer) and that helped with my energy level (protein of 12g in a container).

Have you tried the Unjury chicken Soup? It is really tasty. I used it alot during the liquid and full liquid stage to keep me hydrated. I could not do the Protein Shakes, they gag me and gave me the squirts!

The Unjury is really good if you put some of your own chicken broth in it. It makes it taste even better and one envelope has 21 g of Protein. Lots of protein for 8 oz of liquid!

Get some!

Kelly :D

I did the same thing, but I used Pedialyte for no more reason than Gatorade always tasted nasty to me.

I used to NOT be even be able to lie on my left side because by stomach would make all sorts of non stop blurping and growling noises, it was comical at first then got to be annoying. It let up eventually.

I just talked with my doctor and I'm to stay on Clear Liquids all weekend until I see him Monday morning. I've tried Unjury chicken Soup and my tummy didn't like that either. I was given the go ahead to have diluted fruit juice if I am feeling weak. They were ok with my Water intake (40oz.) for right now. Apparently my tummy is swollen and won't let me take in more than that. I've tried popcisles but my tummy hates those as well. Seems like it really really really likes plain water. Crazy huh? Oh I can't wait for some refried Beans, but I have a feeling its going to be a long time before that passes my lips. Thanks everyone for your responses.

Everyone really is different. I can get down my 64 oz of Water without too much trouble. It gurgles down and I sometimes drink too fast, but it's working, But I can almost totally drink Isopure if its very very cold without any problem. Annoying, but I figure $5 per bottle and I'm getting 1 per day down, it's probably worth it. I'm still tired and weak though... not too bad for 3 days post open.

Imawhodat, you are singing my song!!! I couldn't tolerate any liquid Protein after surgery and I was freaked out about how it was all going to happen. I tried a bunch of them, too, but nope--your description of having an alien in your tummy really rings true. I'm so sorry you're still having problems!! As someone who's been there, too, I can tell you it really does get easier. At your stage, since you're on clears, I would try mixing some juice into my Water and sipping constantly. Don't worry too much about anything other than staying hydrated and maybe trying some of the clear Protein drinks (Isopure, although I couldn't....). You can definitely stir some Protein stuff into your Gatorade or Pedialyte. Just stay hydrated and give your poor tummy time to heal. chicken broth is great and soothing (and there's a tiny bit of protein in there!). Hope it gets easier for you very, very soon.

Meg

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
