Recommended Posts

SO... i'll be starting the pre op diet in a couple of weeks. am new to low carb, so i think i need help... i think they said i need to keep carbs down to 40 grams a day which seems crazy. fruits and veggies are not even doable. so meat, cheese, eggs... what's your favorite meal on a "no" carb diet?

I still do veggies, but I don't do fruit and I can usually keep it around 30g a day. I have a Protein Powder that I mix with coffee and it comes to 25g of Protein and only 3g carbs. I often eat eggs for Breakfast and sometimes throw in some turkey bacon. My favorite is 1 egg plus 2 egg whites made into an omelet with portabello mushrooms and low fat cheese. I also eat a lot of low fat cottage cheese, string cheese, grilled shrimp and grilled chicken which I sometimes put on a salad. Sometimes I just grab some deli meat and roll it up for a quick snack. I make pizza bites by microwaving pepperoni so it gets a little crispy, then i top it with a little dollop of sauce and some low fat mozz cheese and toss them back in the microwave again. dinner will often be salmon, chicken or shrimp by itself, in a stir fry or with a side of asparagus or broccoli. I like to snack on almonds or celery dipped in hummus. Last week I was craving tuna salad, so I made some but used romaine lettuce leaves as a wrap instead of a bread product. I even had corn on the cob one night and had a lot of beer last weekend at a bbq. I just planned it into my diet and made sure to be ultra low carb for the rest of the day and I still managed to keep total carbs around 30g.

my diet was less than 30g carbs per day, and it didn't include carbs from veggies or "meat" products (eggs, cheese).

I snack on cheese or broccoli w/ sour cream dip. Pepperoni and salami sticks (wal mart) are my fav. Breakfast is 3 eggs + 3 egg whites with 1/2c cheese + 1/2 c ground sausage or chopped bacon. I eat breakfast late so i usually don't have lunch, maybe an Atkins chocolate shake and cheese around 2 (yummy!! and filling). dinner is meat (as much as i want, usually 2 chicken breasts) and a veggie. I did find AWESOME salad dressing. Marie's ranch (in produce section) you get 2tbsp for 2g carb (might be 1g, i can't remember). its DELICIOUS! I put that on a load of lettuce and chopped chicken and bacon. I've been doing this for about 2 mos and amazingly have not gotten bored. Once i had a pound of bacon for lunch, lol.

I don't like tuna/chicken salad without bread, but if you're open to it you can do that - just watch the relish!

Also - I thought chewing gum was great to keep my mouth busy, until i discovered it had 2g of carbs in each piece! FML!

OH! ANOTHER TIP! coffee cream = HUGE carbload (if you like it creamy, like me). Discovered full fat half & halfd. 2tbsp for 1g carb!! WOOOOHOOOO! :o)

Also, i bought popsicle molds and used crystal light to make them. Its a nice, cool treat (sugar free popsicles are 4g carb). And its cheaper than buying them pre-made, too wink.gif i'm all about cheap!

you can bake pepperoni or parmesan cheese lumps and make them into chips for something crunchy. Look for marinades for your meat to make them more interesting. meat doesn't really soak up a lot of it so i consider it 1 serving of marinade per piece of meat.

I also make a deli variety plate of cheese, pep, salami and ham and have the for lunch frequestly.

don't forget sugar free jello!

HTH, and good luck! The carb withdrawal SUCKS in the first few days, but after 1-2 weeks it goes away completely. I no longer crave them or even think about them. FRIGGIN AMAZING!, if you asked me tongue.gif

LMAO, yeah the gum thing REALLY pissed me off!

It's ok to be hungry, you can eat! I've been eating about 2500 calories and am losing (slowly, but losing still) by skipping the carbs!

have some eggs! rolleyes.gif

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
