update for you - post op day 9 o

Recommended Posts

Thought I would give y'all an update and impression of how things went etc. I had my sleeve on Tuesday, June 14th about 2:30 pm. The surgery itself went fine and took about 45 minutes. I was in recovery about an hour and a half when my family came in and they put me in a room.

The first night was fine and controlled with morphine through the IV. I started walking bit by bit around the halls. I was more sore than expected, but it was tolerable with meds.

Before I got discharged the next day, they started me on fluids...one oz every 10 to 15 minutes. Also, they took out the drain which was very little pain.

When I got home, I used pain meds at least to sleep until day 6. I had some nausea but had meds for it. Each day it seems I get a little better. I am still on fluids only and I was lucky...getting Fluid down had not been a problem.

I'm on about 40 to 60 grams of Protein now and 60 to 80 oz. of fluid pretty easily. I work from home but still have some burning sensation (nerves regeneration) on my skin and in my abs on the left side. I have low back pain too if I stand up for more than 20 to 30 minutes or sit up in a straight chair. I'm doing phone calls...easy meals etc for my family. I still have help for the three kids (under 7). I can drive and bend down but I am still pretty sore. Feels like I did 3000 crunches. Lol!! I do have diarrhea about twice a day (and expected to with the liquid diet) plus some fun rumblings in my tummy and pretty disgusting gas at times. I think I started walking enough not to have too bad of gas pain though. Thank you Lord!!

I had lost 17 pounds on 2 wk preop diet and have lost 14 pounds since surgery. Total of 31 pounds!! 25% of what I need to lose!! I am not tummy hungry but am still head hungry. Since my calories aren't much...200 to 400 total per day, I run out of steam easily and nap.

I can now lie flat in bed and get up out of our quick sand of a memory foam bed. Lol. I spent the first 6 days in the recliner.

I'm looking forward to getting to the gym and can see how I will be back to "normal" soon. Excited and happy but it is emotional at times. Thankful that the good Lord has given me a way to beat this addiction and that He has brought me through with flying colors. I had the added fears of having Chrons disease, so I am super grateful!

My biggest surprise? The low back pain...since I'm a physical therapist by degree...I get it, but am surprised at how much that has bugged me. I would not change a thing though and I would do it over in a heart beat!!!

Thanks to all who share on this board. You all prepared me well, and I hope to give back to others now.

Happy journey to all of you!!!

Joan

Thank you for sharing Joan. I noticed you say you work from home. On what day did you start working again, if you have yet?

I work from home too and having my surgery on a Monday and hoping I can do a little bit of work on that Thurs and Friday. Even if its half days.

I hope things keep getting better for you.

Thanks y'all. For TexasMom65, I started with phone calls from the recliner on day 4. I was pretty unmotivated though!! Lol. Day 6 i was on computer about 20 minutes at a time due to my low back pain. Everyone is different though. Hear some people are back on day 5 full time!!! I wish. Haha. Goodluck and prayers for all of you for smooth sailing!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
