Bikram Yoga after surgery

Recommended Posts

Has anyone practiced Bikram post surgery? If so, how soon after? I started practicing Bikram in October and I've come to enjoy and crave it, for mental and physical reasons. I would like to make it part of my post surgery workout routine. My concern is it's very important to stay hydrated before, during, and after class. Doing 26 postures in a room for 90 minutes at 105 degrees with 50 % humidity can take a lot out of you. Water is essential. I'm worried that it will be awhile before I'm able to consume as much water as I currently do to prepare for class.

I used to LOVE Bikram Yoga and am hoping I can get back into after my surgery. I would think you would need clearance from your Doc...espcially making sure you are completely healed and then some. Bikram puts alot of stress on the abdominal muscles. As far as hydration, I would always drink TONS of Water the day of class, so I would be well hydrated before class, then you could sip during class. Hope you get back to class when you're healed and ready, it truly is the best workout for the mind, body and spirit! Good luck and NAMASTE :)

I like yoga too and wow the heat in Bikram is hard to deal with but WOW! It feels so good when you walk out of that room! I am also hoping I can make that part of my routine. Let us know what the doc says.

Hi all

FYI. I'm back to doing Bikram after surgery. My first class back was pretty rough, but I'm sure it was b/c I went on an empty stomach. Now I make sure to have a piece of cheese, fruit, or almonds before class. It's just enough to get me through the class. I was concerned about being able to drink Water during class, but so far so good. Any other yogis out there?

Used to do heated vinyasa classes all the time a couple of years back before I got REALLY big. Just went to my first one back this weekend and loved it!! Definitely planning to make it part of my weekly routine. It's incredible how much better it makes you feel - although from being so out of practice, I have to admit my muscles feel like they're on fire today! :P

@Getinmybelly The meds/supplements haven't made any difference in my practice, well not that I know of. My first class back was pretty rough, I was nauseous, dizzy and tired, but that's b/c I didn't prepare well. I know now that I need to eat something before class, drink twice as much Water, and sit out when I need to. With Bikram the more you go the better you feel. My first class (a year ago today) was pretty rough, but I came right back. Bikram has put me in touch with my body, increased my flexibility, and helped me release stress. I can't believe it's become a normal part of my exercise routine and how quickly I was hooked on it after my first class. I'd say give it another shot, drink plenty of water, and get in your Protein prior to class.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
