I see that there are different kinds of Proteins, which one are you supposed to take during the liquid phase: Protein isolate, concentrate, or blend? And are the Protein Shots allowed during this phase?

Thank you for taking the time to answer,

Paola

My Proteins have always been a blend of isolates...some whey, some egg, some soy, some milk...I didn't use shots because I heard they were mostly collagen which is not a good Protein source. What does your nutritionist say, or your surgeon's guidelines? They all have their particular likes/dislikes.

Avoid those Protein Shots. It's not a good source of Protein at all.

I would not say the Protein Shots are "not good at all"... If a person is having difficulty with food, and needs to get in protein and liquids the shots are a source. Our bodies may not totally absorb the complete protein that comes from the concentrated shots, but our bodies will absorb some, and some is better than not at all when you are going through a rough time with foods or protein levels. Check with your doc &/or nut, I questioned this about 2 months ago after reading a post on this forum and both agreed that some is better than none, the protein shots are a source of protein.

I was thinking of the shots just in case I was having a hard time with liquids right after the surgery, I just decided on the surgery a few days ago and want to be as well informed as can be

Don't really know what he says yet, just decided on the surgery a few days ago and haven't yet met my doctor. But I can ask my nutritionist, just as soon as I get hold of him, its my dad :P

IMO, the Protein "shots" should only be used in the case that the person cannot tolerate any other form of Protein. They are much lower on the quality scale. Again though it is better than no protein at all!

However if you can stand them, whey Proteins or Proteins made from milk or eggs are your best bet. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
