first time user - sleeve surgery scheduled 7.28

Recommended Posts

Good morning all: Today is Monday June 20 and my daughter found this site for me. I am scheduled for a vertical gastrectomy July 28 so of course I am apprehensive. I am with the Univ. of Chicago Center for Obesity and it is a great program. I don't know where to start, since I've never been in a chat room before. Hope I get some good responses. My pre-surgical date is July 18 and that will be my final meeting with the anestheologist, the surgeon, the nutritionist, and a final physical. I will also start a limited (1200-1400 calorie) high Protein low carb diet. I'm at work now so my time is limited. I will check my email at home tonight to see if I got any responses.

Hellodolly, I had my vsg on 6/6, I'm pretty new to this site as well. I have found this site extremely helpful and I'm sure you will too. It's nice to know we are not alone on this journey. Since May 23rd (the start of my pre op diet) I've lost 20 lbs and it feels great already. Good luck to you and keep posting!

Welcome to the site and congratulations on getting a date for your new life to begin! You'll find a lot of support on here as well as a lot of information if you check out all the areas of the forums. I'll be starting my 2 week liquid pre-op diet next week. I can't wait!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
