Vacation and Family Reunion

Recommended Posts

I am on my first vacation since having surgery and attending a family reunion to boot...both with potential landmines for the newly sleeved! Plus...couldn't convince hubby to let me bring my scale on the plane so I haven't been able to weigh obsessively. ;).

The good news is the folks I was most worried about noticing my weight loss and reduced food intake have barely noticed. I've got a couple of "is that all you are going to eat comments" but I just said that I had been snacking all day and wasn't very hungry. The bad news Is that I HAVE snacked a lot more and have eaten things I wouldn't have eaten at home. But..my jeans (size 12!) and shirts feel looser so I don't think I have gained weight. It is really hard not to weigh every day though!

GOOD FOR HUBBIE! YOU ADDICT YOU! :) They have probably noticed, but from shear jealousy they won't mention it. . . i've noticed people do that, they are nutty that way. . . enjoy your vacation! And you'll probably love your new weight when you get home. . I can just see obsessive you galloping to the scale the minute you hit the door!

I am getting ready to go on vacation for 2 weeks and I am worried about not having access to all the healthy food that I eat at home while I am gone. There is also a lot of the family that doesn't know I had surgery so if you don't mind I am going to steal that line if anything comes up. There are just some people I don't care to tell about the surgery as I am not in the mood for their judgments of my life. I am hoping somebody has a scale in their bathroom when I visit or I may end up at Walmart too !!! :)

Got back last night from my vacation and my vacation from the scale and still lost weight! whooo-hooo!

This was really an affirming vacation for me as I ate a lot of my favorite foods in New England (where I was visiting) including blueberry pie, fried clams, oyster stew and a lobster roll! The difference this year is that I ate 5 fried clams...not a huge plateful with french fries and coleslaw like I would have before surgery! ;) I ate the lobster off of the lobster roll without eating the bread and didn't even eat all of that. My crab cake was shared with hubby and the piece of blueberry pie was just a sliver. The important message to me was that I didn't feel deprived and ate all of my favorite foods but just in portions sizes that were appropriate for my new little tummy. Going on vacation worried me and especially being with family who didn't know about the surgery but it couldn't have gone better. :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
