Almost 2wks Post-Op, and still liquid-only diet :(

Recommended Posts

Hello friends! My surgery date was 6/9 and so I am 10days post-op and still on this "Phase II" diet of only clear broth, Protein Shakes and Crystal Light. I am just about sick of those things, and look forward to getting my meat on!

As I read the different forums, I realize that there are so many different versions of diets 2wks Post-Op.

I see my surgeon's office next week, and believe after that visit , I will start Phase III (solely pureed Proteins like seafood, 3oz egg but NO pasta/rice/grains etc) .

It is becoming so difficult, as I am honestly hungry at this stage, and have to prepare scrumptious meals for my kids , so this liquid-only diet is stressful.

Do any of you have stories to share of what's in store for me, and WHEN exactly? LOL!

Baked Salmon (yumm) ?

Red Beans (yummm)?

It's hard to say when you would start on solid foods. My diet said that I could eat Jello in the first week and I still can't eat it. I'm a meat eater for sure, and I've tried chicken twice and vomitted both times and got the worst gas pains ever. So you can't necessarily put a date to when you can start eating certain foods. It's just easier for some people to start back eating somewhat normal and others it will take a while.

My doctor even told me that there are some things that you may not be able to start back eating period. But remember it's a life change. We're not all going through this to start back eating like before.

I know how you feel about the liquids. I was actually depressed about it for that time, but it will get better as you transition. I want chicken so badly, but I'm able to do without it because I can eat potato and eggs, and shrimp and that sort of stuff.

I'm only 3 weeks in, and I'm getting happier everyday.

Are you allowed to have Protein drinks mixed with Water? Also the Syntrax nectar Proteins were considered "clears" on my program. The added Protein might help with the hunger. As for the liquids, it's really a pain in the butt. However, it's essential for healing, and might help your transition to more solid food easier.

Hang in there ! ! !

THANKS for sharing your experience! I moved my post-op appointment up from Friday to tomorrow, which would be 12days after surgery.. I really think I can handle the next stage foods, but like you said, there are some things that can never happen again. The 2 week liquid diet, both before and after operation, is very taxing, and I look forward to the next phase.

I am surprised that you can eat potato now! It is amazing that diets can differ so much. My next phase (3) is strictly pureed seafood, and chicken, eggs, and certain Beans, which will last for 2 months, until my next Phase (4) which will add vegetables.. I will remain on Phase 4 until I lose 75% of my excess body weight, and only THEN can I go onto Phase 5 which will have starches etc...

I am keeping the faith, and am glad for this site for support!

Take care!

Thanks for the idea! Proteins are allowed, but I was getting sick of the ZOIC shakes.. I will be sure to try the Syntrax nectar :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
