Protien drink troubles

Recommended Posts

I'm day 3 post op. I'm almost positive my nutritionist said 44 grams of Protein. But I'm not allowed thick liquids till next week. My doc has his patients stay on clear liquid for 1 wk post op. I'm gonna check the protein grams on plain ol' milk & see if I can figure out how to make my drinks at home.

Atkins Advantage is great tasting . I love the chocolate flavor . Each drink has 21 grams of Protein. Another good one is Pure Protein (vanilla flavor) it has 35 grams per drink . I have tried carb solutions and Yuck I hated the after taste and another one I tried was the designer whey Protein powder mix Yuck!. I like the convenienve of just having them in the can in the fridge ready for me to grab whenever needed. Dr Ortiz has his patients eating 60 grams of protein a day. Every Dr. is different though.

In the US, which for a while anyway had the worst banding results in the world, the doctors want patients on lengthy, bizarre pre-op diets. A couple of New Zealand doctors also wanted patients on two weeks of pre-op liquids. They were convinced that doing so would "shrink" the fat around the liver. They were running a test, which they said they'd publish, on their theory when one of the doctors wrote back to me. Two years ago. I still haven't seen a word published showing any proof at all that two weeks of liquids does anything other than make patients crazy and stressed and guilt-ridden when they don't follow it.

And many US doctors want to adopt a "fill schedule." And they often titrate the patient up to restriction so slowly that s/he gives up long before any restriction is reached. Or they say "lose 10% of your body weight or I won't do the surgery."

Why can't these know-it-alls stop assuming that everything American is better just because it is American and look around? There are very expereinced band surgeons all over the world, whose patients do just fine. Do our guys pay attention and follow their lead? No. Makes me so glad I went to Mexico. End of this rant, but I'm sure I have a couple more in me.

I'm hearin' ya, SueG. I was treated better in the Mexican hospital by staff that didn't even speak English compared to the way American docs handle things. I learned about the band a couple months ago, which lead me to a Bypass vs. Band seminar. I wanted surgery but my insur only covers bypass, and I decided to go thru w/ it. I asked my doc for a referral to get my required pre-approval, and she agreed since my BP & cholesterol were sky high along with my history of weight-related anxiety/insomnia, which causes my severe sleep apnea. But she begged me to try one last diet pill before surgery. I was prescribed Bontril - side effects: "Elevated BP, anxiety, and insomnia." So I was prescribed Valium to take at night.

Let's recap: my American doctor's answer to my lifetime problem of obesity was "Speed for Breakfast and downers for dinner." But those Mexican doctors don't know what they're doing when it comes to LapBands, right? Because they've done so few.... NOT. Other than the pain & misery, which comes with any surgery and my lung infection, I loved my Mexico LapBand experience. Yo gusto mucho!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
