What is up with therapist

Recommended Posts

This site is my daily support to supplement my monthly support that I get through the hospital. It's about people sharing their stories, not getting medical advice!! Leave that to the doctors. Telling someone their 'not that big' is rude and unprofessional.

It is obvious that your therapist needs therapy! I wouldn't go back to them. They should be providing you with support and guidance with your own choices. They shouldn't be telling you what their opinion is of you! Get as far away from them as possible! There are plenty of great therapists out there. That one is definetly not one for you!

Good advice from above. Your therapist needs therapy or to retake some courses.

On here you receive a wide breadth of information, relating with newbies, just been sleeved or experienced sleevers. We have different surgeons, different genders, different affiliations, different frame of references but what we do share in common is our desire to be healthy and also be in normal BMI range. We can empathize and share with each other. You are a grown adult who can self filter out obvious bad information or advice. Think you reading these posts will not do damage to you. :)

Rev Me Up has said it all. YOU are the one in charge here. I would so try to find a therapist who either works for a weight loss group or has been there, done that, or just a new one in general. It is amazing how people who haven't been on this site are somehow experts, isn't it? The oddest questions come up here, and they are inevidibly the ones I find most helpful. I'm 10 weeks out and have learned so much. There are so many guidelines which differ from doctor to doctor, but the general questions are most helpful. And the reassurance about stalls can only come from a physical or online support group, I do believe. You get some different help and press on with your good self!

My therapist "suggested" tha I stay away from this site because it just screams "sickness". WTF, this is the one of the few places I can get some helpfull information. I should mention that this therapist is telling me that I really don't need WLS because I'm not that "big". Then why in the hell would two doctors give me letters of medical nessesity. Has anybody else had this problem???????

My surgeon actually offers support groups for the different procedures they do in their office. They said that while everyone has a slightly different experience, it helps to discuss what you are going through with folks in the same/similar situation. There is a lot of information out there that isn't valid or is meant to scare you. As long as you are educated you are empowered.

One of my favorite quotes is: " Think Education is Expensive? Try Ignorance. "

I have a good friend who is a doctor - when I told him I was doing the surgery he immediately jumped on me with questions about the type, details, information etc. When I told him what I knew of the sleeve, that I was active on the discussion boards and really knew what I was getting myself into he calmed and said he wished more of his patients were like me.

People in the medical field, regardless of their specialty, are PRACTICING medicine and are there to help you be successful, happy and healthy. The road is not always easy but the right road is worth it in the end. :)

I just had the Psych eval today and she told me to keep coming here as it sounded like I was getting great support on these forums. So glad I found this place!

My biggest question is how can surrounding yourself with supportive people that are going through lots of the same things, sharing their problems and celebrating their success a bad thing? Where else can we find a group of this size and diversity with one common problem? Face it, we all have a mental problem with food or we wouldn't have to opt for such a procedure. This forum has been a wonderful support since I have found it. I only wish I could have found it prior to my surgery so I could have been more prepared for the obstacles of the first few months post op.

That was my point, I explained to her that the Psych that did my eval told me that it was "great" and that he wished more looking into WLS would seek out as much information as possible. Here you get the good with the bad. Some people are happy with the results, some not so happy.

It sounds as if your therapist has a HUGE ego and feels threatened that you are getting information (that she/he couldn't possibly provide) from another source. I'd go to someone else...a bad therapist is worse than no therapist at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
