Recommended Posts

When did you transition from healing to exercising? Also how vigorously did you exercise when you first started out?

My doc gave the go ahead at one month post op but I waited until 7 weeks. I am now doing Fitness Kickboxing with no issues other than the aches and pains that go along with a strenuous work out.

walk right away, also did isometric and light strengthening on my own.

Started going to gym and doing cardio at 4 weeks, started free weights at 5 weeks out with just 10 lbs. After six weeks, I was free to lift whatever I could handle

I started walking on the treadmill as soon as I felt up to it, which was about 5 days after surgery. I think around my 3 week mark I started doing zumba and working my arms with light hand weights. I know it was a little soon but I took it easy and tried not to strain or use my stomach muscles excessively. After 6 weeks, I was back in the swing of things, doing full workouts. My fitness trainer just said not to use any weights while doing ab workouts for a while, but she said it was fine to do crunches or anything like that after 6 weeks.

Ok, so it is my first post on here. Just a warning to those who are just fixing to start exercizing for the first time after getting sleeve. I was told not to start exercizing until after week 5. But at week 3 I felt so good decided to go walk the beach. Walked a little ways and felt great. Stomach started gurgling.....and just a heads up.....MAKE SURE YOU ARE CLOSE TO A POTTY THE FIRST COUPLE OF TIMES YOU EXERCIZE...It was ok...I made it to the house :)

Lost 37 lbs since May 23! Yea Me!

i started exercising a week after my surgery. I thought to myself that since the nurses made me get up and walk in the hospital I could walk on my treadmill. So I started off strolling for 30 mins everyday but on the first day, I encountered very bad cramps in my stomach so I stopped that day.

Also the doc told me to stay away from the stepper (which is my favourite machine) until i reached my 4th week, but I started pretty slow within 2 weeks of doing the op, and it was fine.

You should know how your body feels when you're doing it. Definitely don't overexert yourself, Take your time when starting. If your incisions hurt, then stop; if your stomach hurts then slow down; if you're feeling dizzy then stop. Things like that.

I tried here and there in the house, but I did not seriously hit it until the 3 month mark.

Walking right away, was outpacing my wife at about a week. Re-started weight machines at the gym after about 3 weeks, upper and lower body only, isolating the core/abdomin, cut the weight back to 1/2-2/3 what I had been doing before on a toning basis. Light swimming after 4 weeks or so. At 6 weeks am still apprehensive about tickling the abdomin too much - don't need hernias!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
