Vomiting after 4 weeks after surgery........

Recommended Posts

Hi

I had the Sleeve (VSG) surgery on May 20th. I am not able to eat because I keep on vomiting and having diarrhea. All I can keep down is Popsicle..... I am so afraid to go to work this coming Monday. What can I do so that I can stop vomiting? My doctor said I can add a few more things to my diet but I don't know how to cook something that I can only eat 2oz of. I am always tired. Its hard to keep down my Protein Drinks. I'm been home for four weeks and its been a hard 4 weeks.

Can anyone help me with some suggestions on what I can do so that I won't vomiting & have diarrhea? what can I take to stop it? I bought so many different medicines from the drug store and nothing has worked.

Thank you for your time.

What does your doctor say about your vomiting? Adding "a few more things" to your diet is not going to help if you can't keep any of them down. I would suggest making a batch or Eggface's Protein ice cream (www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.com) if you can keep down a Popsicle, but really you need to stop vomitting or you'll end up in the ER with dehydration.

Have you had this ever since the beginning? For four weeks you have not been able to keep anything down?? If so I would go right to the ER. You are probably very dehydrated and need fluids. I wouldn't wait until Monday when your doctor will be in the office, I would go now!

I was dehydrated 1 week after and I needed 2 bags of Fluid. After I felt so much better and have been fine since I was juiced up.

Please keep us posted.

I am so sorry you are having a rough time. I didn't have that issue after surgery. I am a nurse and I say you are probably dehydrated. There are medications they can give you for nausea. They have Zofran dissolve tabs that you put under your tounge or Phenergan gel that you put on your wrist. Call your surgeons on call service that they have for the weekend and ask for one of the two. If you are not able to keep down fluids after that, go to the ER. The diarrhea is probably from all of the liquids, I did have that. If you can drink Gatoraid or Pedialyte for the electrolytes. Good luck.

I'm sorry to hear you're still having problems. I did, too. I wasn't on a PPI after surgery until around week 5--and I threw up regularly, once or twice a day, for the first few weeks postsurgery. It didn't matter before what I ate; a food might stay down one meal and then not work the next. Once I started Prilosec, the vomiting slowed and now has been gone for almost 2 weeks (YAY). You don't mention if you're taking Prilosec or Nexium or anything for acid. I take mine at night, and it has made a HUGE difference.

As for cooking stuff that you only eat a small amount of, it's pretty simple to keep the "fixings" of various meals in the fridge and then combine as you feel like eating it. For instance, if you keep a small amount of lunch meat, some cream cheese, some yogurt, some cottage cheese, etc., you can pull out a bit of whatever you feel like when it's meal time. Our microwave is also a great help--we ALWAYS have leftovers. I take a can of Soup, eat around 1/4 c., and put the rest in the fridge for another meal.

Hang in there--I have definitely been where you are, and you CAN feel better. If you're not on a PPI, call your doc and ask about it, and if you are, call and see if you need a different or stronger one.

Best--

Meg

I went to Urgent Care today. I was dehydrated & I was given two bags of IV. They doctor also thinks I might be having a problem with my stomach and he wants me to go see a GI doctor. I was also given an injection of Zofran, plus I was given the pills to take home.

Its been a long day and I am very tired. Thank you everyone for the advise and concern.

I appreciate that very much.

Thanks for updating! I am glad you got fluids that should help a bunch. Please keep us posted when you see the GI doctor and let us know what he says.

I'm thinking the same thing, dehydrated. I would go to the hospital right away. It's sounds dangerous to me. You're job isn't worth your life.

Well, if I would have read further, I would have seen you were dehydrated! I'm glad you got help! What I learned from my Kaiser orientation is they totally stress that you have to sip Water throughout the day or you'll end up dehydrated again because you can't "gulp" down Water anymore once you've been sleeved. Be careful and keep sipping! Glad you're feeling better!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
