detchie 1 Posted June 17, 2011 i am so craving a piece of gum .. my surgery was on monday 6/13..can i chew gum? I wouldn't it causes gas. I found out the hard way. I never knew you swallowed so much air when chewing. You may be able to tolerate it a little better in a month and then I wouldn't recommend you chew too long. sleeve 4 me 910 Posted June 17, 2011 I don't think it's a silly question I'm 9 1/2 months out and barely started chewing gum again, but I've heard it's not a good idea. I try to be really careful.
mina 27 Posted June 18, 2011 i love chewing gum. the doctor advise against it for two reasons: one, he said when you chew you get the gastric juices going (that made sense to me,so immediate post op is not good idea) and two, he said he don't want us swallowing the gum which would cause problems with the staple line (uh i think i did that once in my lifetime in high school so the teacher wouldn't catch me).
