So Much Conflicting info

Hey, Sleeve-Twin!!

I don't have any different advice from what everyone else has already said. I am a slow loser too. I have only lost 34 pounds since the surgery. I too lose great for a week or two weeks, then lose nothing for a week or two weeks (or three...). I have noticed that I stop losing weight if I let myself stay constipated for very long. Then when I finally get everything moving again, I'll start losing again.

I don't know the answers. But I don't let myself get crazy over it. Keep me updated on your progress. And don't let it stress you out too much because the stress can make your body hold onto the weight too.

your body has to stay in ketosis to lose the weight. that being said...500 calories a day until you reah your goal. i did a liquid diet before i decided to do the sleeve. they put you into ketosis. 1000 calories is way too many in the weightloss stage. look it up. i am not a doctor, but you can buy ketosis strips to see if you are in it. it is all about calories. that really is the bottom line. i believe it.

just on more thing....doctors think we are retarded so they don't explain things in depth. yes you need cards, yes you really need Protein...research ketosis.

some are for it and some are against it. but our bodies were never designed to handle this food we have in this country now.

Hi june13, well I'll just have to disagree that I should only intake 500 calories per day. No way no how will I ever do this, it for me would be incredibly unhealthy. Not to say others shouldn't - but for me it's a no go.

This is very conflicting, as I went to the doctors yesterday and he told me three things to worry about...WATER, Protein and EXERCISE, he told me not to stress over calories at all...he said Protein first and then veggies and then I really shouldn't have much room for anything else. I'm to eat 4-5 small meals a day!

My doctor says the same exact thing! And I love it because I don't spend any time keeping track of numbers.

I do not agree that you have to be in ketosis to lose weight...and 1000 calories is not to much in the weight loss stage. I did a body scan at my doctors office and the results said that I need 1600 to maintain my weight, so to lose weight I need to consume 1600. 1000 would be well under 1600. Plus, with exercise....

Everyone is different.

This is NOT true, sorry, but it's not. You have to remember that the vast majority of your stomach was just removed. In no way will you be able to eat the same amount of food that you did pre-surgery and so by drastically cutting calories, no matter HOW you do it, you WILL lose weight. With that being said, later on when weightloss is a bit tougher, don't put junk into your body but on a balanced diet, you will still lose weight. Low carb IS right for some, but for some people that have kidney disease or kidney problems, low carb is not an option (this is what Atkins says in his book. Pregnant or nursing women should up their carb count and people with kidney disease should ask their doctor to see if it's safe for them). No matter what you do, there is no alternative but to lose weight, especially at first. If later on your weight loss slows or stops with a balanced diet, then yes, move to low carb and it will pick up again...probably. Everyones bodies are different. There is NO scientific evidence suggesting that the ONLY way to lose weight is to be in ketosis. I am a fan of low carb dieting but sorry, this is NOT true and I don't want someone to take this as fact and possibly not have the surgery done because they have kidney problems, which are common with diabetes.

You're absolutely right Irene, unless you want to make yourself very sick! The body wasn't meant to run on that few calories for the long haul. Depending on the amount of fat you have to burn, someone may get away with it for a little while but then burns out and starts eating the first thing available to it...muscle. Remember, the heart is a muscle and it's not immune to the body devouring itself when there's nothing in it. This is partly why I never go more than 2 1/2 to 3 waking ours without putting something healthy in my mouth. Even if it's a bite of Protein. Listen to your body and feed it if it's hungry. A car doesn't run without gas and neither will your body, at least not for long.

Hi Renee! One thing- the 60-80 grams of Protein you take in is what drives your body to consume fat cells and not itself. That is the principle behind the high Protein intake - it protects your muscle while you are taking in so few calories.

I am also one who does not lose on low calorie diets. I never really realized it until my pre-op diet! All of a sudden pounds were falling off! For me, at least, ketosis is the way.

Luckily that is also my particular surgeons plan- he is very strict- 60-80 grams protein- 64 plus ounces of Water, 30 grams net carbs, regular exercise, and supplements.600-800 calories a day. Firm rules for optimum weight loss, according to my Dr. Feng.

Heya sweetie! I totally agree that Protein is the foundation to good weight loss, however, not everyone will get into ketosis and it's absolutely not needed for weight loss. Weight Watchers is a hugely successful program that cuts calories and increases exercise, or at least, they used to. At any rate, science is science and if you're burning more calories than you're putting into your body, you will lose weight. Science. Fact. Another fact is that just by being alive you burn calories. We have very very small tummies now and can't hold a lot of calories so yes, we will lose weight, especially at first because we're drastically reducing calorie intake. Does this make sense? Ketosis IS the way for some people but not everyone has to, needs to, or even should put their body into ketosis. Granted, Ketosis is not the same thing as ketoacidosis (a very dangerous condition that happens to diabetics) but ketosis can be dangerous for some people and I wouldn't want anyone to think that ketosis is the ONLY way because then maybe that would turn someone away from having the surgery when in reality, it may save their life.

A proper diet for anyone would be Protein first, then veggies / fruits and then empty carbs like Desserts. This is a good diet for anyone to follow in order to be healthy. I have to say though that this may or may not end up being low carb, depending on your choices. Hope this makes more sense

my doc said 600 cals max for the first 3 months post op, then 800 for months 3-6, and 1000 for months 6-12... then 1000 to 1200 for maintenance...

recently i've found that the less calories i intake, the more i lose, which is not only scientifically proven, but basic common sense.... i'm also low carbing it, but i've increased my carbs a little more.. to around 40 grams per day.... and i'm actually losing more..

Most importantly, i think the key to losing weight is to shake things up a bit... eating around the same number of calories per day, is like walking the same distance each day.. at first its fine and then your body gets used to it and then you stall....

You're exactly right...your body gets comfy and won't let any fat go so when you bump up your calories a bit it's tricking your body into saying "hey! I'm not starving I think I'll let this 'excess' go!". I worked for many years with a nutritionist to the stars in Hollywood and learned many of his tricks and tips a long the way. He is deceased due to a car accident but I have no problems helping anyone in their journey, just ask. In 23 or 24 days I've now lost a total of 31 pounds. Keep in mind I have A LOT to lose so it's coming off quickly right now but I know that when I "stall" I have the tools and the knowledge to get it moving very quickly again.

I have not been in Ketosis for over 4 1/2 months and have lost 60 pounds. Don't generalize how people should eat. Especially extremes. I do think your right that a lot of our diet these days is pretty sad and nutritionless...fat-salt-sugar laden junk. You can eat lots of low glycemic index veggies and carbs and still lose weight without going into ketosis.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
