burning sensation post op day 3

Recommended Posts

3rd day post op and I'm having serious burning sensations when I stand or sit. Think it is from incisions and where the muscles where cut open. Anyone else have this and how long does it last?? Other than that...some gas pain n slight nausea at times. I'm getting down 40 oz of fluids n yesterday did 30 grams Protein. Thanks for your advice!!

I'm not sure that anyone really KNOWS what causes that burning sensation. I had it when I had my gall bladder removed. I can't remember exactly, but it seemed that it lasted a month...maybe a little longer, but it got progressively better. Some have mentioned maybe it was a pulled stitch.

Thanks Heather. I don't think I've done enough to pull a stitch. It hurts even where there is no incision...which is why I think it may b muscle?? Or maybe nerve ending pain in skin. Feels like its on the surface. I appreciate ur response. Just knowing someone else had it makes me feel better. :) Joan

You have stitches underneath the skin too, but like I said nobody knows. I guess I wasn't so calm coming out of anesthesia, sat up quickly, yanked the IV out of my arm and when the nurse came to make me calm, I pushed her away. Of course then the pain hit me like a ton of bricks and I screamed. That woke me up to being coherent and I begged for pain meds. I assumed I very well could have done some damage moving so abruptly just an hour post op. Hmmmm, I sure hope i don't react like that again. I should probably warn them ahead of time, huh? <cringe> I have no recollection of it and feel bad.

I had my surgery Monday the 13th and I have the same thing! Its weird. The incisions don't bother me at all but about 3 inches below the largest one it burns like crazy. When i lay on my side i have to literally hold it to get some relief. Not sure what it is but I'm not too worried about it as it gets better every day. You are doing great on your fluids. I'm trying but I don't think I've made it to 40 oz yet and as for Protein I'm only at about 15. That is getting better every day too, but I feel pretty darn good! Keep up the good work!!!

Thanks Mistyk73!! I'm still sleeping in a recliner....not sure I could lie down flat n get back up, so yay you for lying on your side!! I am one of those who can get liquids down pretty easy I think....just lucky I guess. Thanks for letting me know u are having it too. Hurts like a son of a gun at times. Hang in there!! Joan

I didn't have burning per se, but I did have some difficulty with my sutures. I think I pulled something with a sneeze!! I know!!! Anyway, I discovered the recliner made it worse. If I sat up more it didn't seem to "stiffen up" so much. Also the frequent walking and moving, even if it hurt, made it go away. At times it was completely gone after some movement. Then the cycle would start again. This went on for about two or three days. But the good news is that it did get progressively better. Hope you feel better soon!!!!

I too am having terrible pains that come quickly and go away quickly ( and then come back again). I am okay as long as I stay still but turning on my side, standing and sitting brings it on. I think that it is gas pain but I'm not sure. I have used the gas x strips with no success. It is really a burning sensation, not sure if it is gas, acid or what. I too am 3 days post op. I am drinking 40 oz mostly Protein. Any ideas?

All I can find is that a burning sensation on the skin can be caused by nerve endings that were cut and are regenerating. It literally feels like someone has lit my skin on fire...and not on the incision but in between them. Hurts any time I move and use my abs on my left. I have found the pain meds and an ice pack held there are the only things bringing relief. Hoping this clears up fast. I think if it was gone I would be somewhat functional. As is, I have a hard time going pee!!! Tmi I know. Frustrating!!! I will keep researching. Joan

I have also found massaging the skin in the area it burns is also helping...just FYI in case anyone else is experiencing this.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
