water aerobics?

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I was watching Extreme Makeover Weight Loss the other night. It was with a man named James who had 250lbs to lose. He had been doing Water areobics and the host Chris Powell pretty much poopooed it implying that it did not offer enough resistance and would not get him anywhere. I always thought water aerobics was a good form of exercise. A friend who does it an hour three times a week told me that she is suppose to be burning 500 calories an hour. How can that not be good?

I think what the host was saying it was not going to get the many anywhere as far as the rapid weight loss the show likes to imply. i applaud the guy for getting out there, in the Water and just moving at his size. The Water aerobics and willing to keep moving is probably what kept him mobile at that point in his life. It is great for burning calories and improving flexibility, but I have to agree for the rapid weight loss they have on the show it would not produce the desired result.

With that said, if you are not out there exercising this is a great starting point! I was surprised to find it way to easy for me at my current fitness level, but I enjoy it and still go every other week when I take a break from toning.

I think Water aerobics is very good in combination with other exercise. I have done it at the Y with good instructors along with the Water barbells and either boots with wings or cuffs and i don't think anyone, even the most fit, called it easy. We were moving the entire time quite strenuously. I am doing it now in my home pool and I find that without that good leader I do not keep a fast enough pace, but I plan on finding a program at a gym as soon as I am cleared after surgery.

Maybe just jumping around in the water without the resistance equipment is not much of a workout?

I do Water aerobics for an hour a week. It's a good work out, but I do it in addition to walking, weight lifting, Zumba and other things. It's good on a "cool down" day.

Water aerobics or "waterobics" is the performance of aerobic exercise in shallow Water such as a swimming pool. In some areas it is known as AquaFit or "aqua aerobics", and is a type of resistance training.Aqua aerobics requires access to a swimming pool via facilities, and in addition to any membership fees to access facilities, classes may cost extra. Although aquatic exercise greatly reduces the risk of injury, not as many calories are burned as would be in some other activities.[/url]Though aquatic activities in general expend more energy than many land-based activities performed at the same pace due to the increased resistance of water, the speed with which movements can be performed is greatly reduced.

Thanks

Oh man, I beg to differ. Water aerobics gets a bad rap due to some forms of it being designed for older people. However, it can be a killer workout -- I got in completely kickass shape doing water aerobics (and teaching it) when I was younger. I always highly recommend it -- with the caveat that you have to find a very good class that utilises a lot of resistance work and a LOT of what would be difficult/high-impact work on land. It will give you a great bod -- long muscles and not too much bulk. Oh yeah -- and it's awesome when it's hot outside (or not) because you don't get too hot and sweaty.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
