acid reflux

Recommended Posts

Good morning friends! I was sleeved May 4th and very seldom suffered with acid reflux pe surgery. Dr repaired a hiatal hernia (didn't know I had until pre op test) and since then, I have to sleep sitting up because I get acid reflux so often. Is this normal? Will it go away? Not sure how to deal with this and don't have a drs appt until next Tuesday. This is the only drawback I've suffered from the surgery, so I'm counting myself very lucky!

Did your Dr. put you on a PPI like Nexium, Aciphex or Prilosec ? If not, you should definatly be on one for the first 6 months and then see how you are doing. Some stay on them forever.

When we have most of our stomachs removed, we still produce large amounts of acid and it takes a while for our system to realize we don't need to produce all that acid. Call your Dr. if you are not taking a PPI.

Kelly :)

What kellyw74 said, get on a PPI. I originally thought I wasn't going to need one, then just tried what my doc gave me (Protonix 1x a day) and now I feel awful when I don't take it. It helps curve appetite (could be in my head) and makes me have 0 acid issues.

I recently forget them on a weekend trip and was suffering pretty badly. You never know how much you need something until it's gone, eh? Thank god for tums...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
