Am I eating too much?

Recommended Posts

Hi to all sleevers out there! this is my first post. The questions and answers are wonderful to read and very helpful. I had my sleeve done on May 2, 2011. So I am just about 6 weeks out. My instructions are to be eating one and a half tbst per meal at the point. My stomach allows me to eat more then that. For instance today I had a Protein Shake with my pills and can drink it down in about 15 min. Then about 4-5 hours later I hac a full small container of greek yogurt and 5 triscut crackers. Then about 2 hours later I had a weight watchers ice cream bar. Then for supper 3 hours later I had a half a brat no bread and about one half cup of macaroni. With all this I get in my 64 oz of Water. I stop eating when I feel the fullness coming on. Im kinda of happy I can eat this much but I am scared of hurting myself. Can anyone at 6 weeks out or longer could eat this amount. I have lost 30 lbs in 6 weeks but am at a stall right now. Im not worried cause im still getting in approx 500 cal per day. Before this week, I could only eat much less then this week dur to the restrictive feeling but this week is different. Would very much apprec. advice. Thanks so much mom.

The only thing that stands out to me is the carbs- things like macaroni and crackers are foods that will go right down if you chew them well and are not providing much nutritionally.

I do have a question though- if you are supposed to have a certain amount- why do you eat more? Though 1 1/2 T seems a bit low- that is nevertheless what you have been told to do. Because I consider my surgeon my partner in my weight loss I will follow what he tells me to do, whether I think it is fair or not . I trust him and I know he has my best interests at heart.

If you feel you can't follow your instructions I think maybe a consult with the nutritionist or your surgeon about the fact you can eat more is warranted and perhaps some advice about choices.

p.s. DO you get all your Protein? That is also key. Are you exercising?

Hey Mom, my surgery was 1 day after yours. I can only eat about half of the greek yogurt, but thats because I'm full. I am able to eat a half turkey sandwich on whole wheat, as well as a half of a 6 in. subway on wheat as well. When I eat those I feel guilty, (so not to often) but it's really not alot. I tried salad for the first time a few days ago and was only able to eat about 2 ounces of chicken and maybe a 1/4 cup of salad. At this stage I'm allowed to eat 1/2 cup. So thats where I try to stay if I feel full before, I don't finish the 1/2 cup. The tablespoon seems to little.

My problem is finding time for exercise, which I need to start making a priority!!! I see the surgeon tomorrow so I hope I'm doing everything right. However, I don't write things down, but I may start just for my own good!

Best of luck!

WoW!!! I'm a few weeks ahead of you guys and I'm not able to eat nearly as much as you guys!! I'm supposed to be transitioning to solids on Monday but that's not gonna happen for me. I'm not even able to finish 1/4c of anything right now!! Not even soup! My Dr. prescribed me some anti-nausea meds to see if that'll help, along with my PPI but I'm battling nausea all day. Sometimes when I even THINK about food I get really queezy!! But that's another story.

I'm very envious that you guys are able to eat 1/2 of a subway sandwich!! Just remember to keep your carbs under 30g a day and your Protein around 80g. The WW ice cream has a lot of carbs!! Just make sure to log all your food so you can keep track of them properly.

So, to answer your question, no, I'm not able to eat nearly as much as you guys can.

My surgery was also a day after yours.

I have been having a Protein shake it the morning when I first get up, then trying to eat a little Breakfast, eggs don't really work for me anymore so I could eat a whole packet of cream of wheat or a whole yogurt cup.

Then i will eat a string cheese mid morning, at lunch I am having the starkist lunch to go which is tuna salad and a couple crackers.

Then this afternoon another cheese stick or fruit ( I brought watermelon today) and then for dinner tonight I will probably have baked chicken at least 4oz, a couple bites of a veg and probably a bite of rice.

I don't think you are eating too much except for the possibility of too many carbs (I seem to have that problem as well) I can eat crackers and I have had my fav veggie chips but bulky bread I don't do well with at all. I had a 6 inch subway meatball marinara about a week ago and ate all of the meatballs and only like 3 bites of the bread it was on.

Yeah for me if I eat the half a turkey sandwich (1 slice of 100% whole wheat bread) or the 1/2 of six inch (3in) Subway (wheat bread) that is usually all the carbs I eat. I haven't even tried regular bread I'm afraid too! But this is usually a treat if I do have this or if I'm on the go!!

At 6 wks out your swelling has probably gone away inside your sleeve, allowing for more food/drink. 1 1/2 T is very little food, unless he was talking about dense protein/meat. shakes and yogurt you may not feel as much restriction so you may be able to drink a good bit. But dense Protein should be a different story. I would definitely measure everything and at this early point I would not be eating any kind of bread. Not just because of calories, but it swells inside your tummy. For me, if I started even a little bread at this point, it would progress to more and more in the near future, which would kinda defeat why I had this surgery. I know I will eventually have a little bread on special occasions, but way further out, not during the "honeymoon" stage. Good luck!

Are you tracking your Protein intake? I still can't drink a shake in 15 mins (takes me at leat 25-30) at almost 7 months post but there are other liquids that I can drink faster! I would stay away from the carbs and maybe input More dense Protein (meats) into your days and it should keep you fuller longer!

And, just an FYI... you all might want to check the Subway website for their nutritional information. Subway may be a healthy alternative for fast food however, they are not really low in Carbs at all. Depending on what bread you get (9 grain is their best) most ALL of their food idems are well over the 30g of carbs allowed. Even if you only eat 1/2 of their sandwich, it's still an enormous amount of carbs. Unless you eat only Protein for the remainder of the day, 1/2 a sandwich may not be the ideal option this early out!! Just a thought.

OKAY LADIES!!!! Thank you for all your imput!! I'm not even the topic starter but I will not be eating that 1/2 subway again for awhile!! I really feel guilty now!! I thought with the whole wheat, I was okay...but either way I'm putting it behind me and just gonna look forward and to more protein!!!

Thanks again..I guess I was wrong thinking it was okay a couple times a week! or on the go!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
