Nervous about how much to eat?

Hi all. First post, and i usually don't read or follow any kind of forums at all, so excuse any lapses in protocol please. I'm at 7 days post op, Andrew Hargroder in Gonzales, LA. Great surgical experience, I guess, it's the only surgery I've ever had.

I've been reading a lot of the topics on here, and hearing about people having lots of trouble eating/drinking enough. Since about day 4 post op, I've not had any problems getting down my Protein Drink throughout the course of the day. It consists of about 20 oz Water mixed with 3 scoops of max Protein from GNC. I've also not had too many problems getting 60-70 oz's of water. i'm also eating 3 6oz yogurts per day, Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.< /p>

So my question is, how do you tell if you're putting too much in? It takes me 15-20 minutes to eat a carton of yogurt. I'm experiencing no pain in my stomach that I'm aware of. I still have a little muscle/incision pain on the "big one" on the left, no pain at all from all the other incisions.

A typical day (now) is cup of yogurt for breakfast, wait 45 minutes and start sipping water. About 10:00 I'll start to get hungry and I'll drink about 6oz of my protien drink. Wait about 45 more minutes and start sipping water again until lunch. I repeat the process throughout the day for lunch and dinner. I start to get hungry about an hour or two after eating my yogurt, so I'll have a third of my Protein Shake mid afternoon and finish it off around 8 in the evening.

I'm really paranoid about MY STOMACH BUSTING OPEN, or even stretching or in any way damaging THE HUGE WOUND IN MY STOMACH THAT I PICTURE IN MY HEAD. That being said, I'm not in any pain and I'm ok with the diet for now. I actually kind of enjoy the simplicity of it, but is it too much?

It sounds like a lot to me, given that your surgery was just a week ago. I was apparently a lot more swollen inside and couldn't get much in the first week or two. What does your doctor say?

I don't think you are eating too much. Everyone's tummy heals at a different speed. Yougurt and Protein drinks are a lot easier to tolerate than solds.

I was able to eat 1/2 c. yygurt without a problem within the first week of surgery. However, it's a day to day thing with solids. After an unfortunate incident with the slimy vomit others have mentioned, I'm really careful to stop as soon as I feel full. Even if it is just an ounce or a 1/4 cup.

Good luck on your journey. If you are following your Dr's diet plan and you stop eating when you feel full, don't worrry!

You are doing great and I would not change a thing. The goal is at least 60 grams of Protein and 64 oz of Water.

Are you mixing one Protein Drink and drinking it through out the day? Because 3 scoops of Protein powder sounds like a lot for one Protein drink.

Don't worry! liquids and and full liquids (yogurt, pudding, etc.) are easy to get down. You will absolutely feel your restriction when you start pureed , real, food. The things you are consuming go right through.

Consider yourself lucky you are able to get your Protein and your liquids! That is a huge step on this journey and bodes well for when you do add purees.

Thanks to you all for your responses. It's just that i thought i was doing really good until i found this forum last night, and then i got really paranoid. I'm going to call my doctor today just to make sure.

To answer Ms. Oregondaisy's quiestion, yes, i just make one 20 oz drink and i drink about a third of it 3 times a day. The Protein is a little better than 20 grams a scoop, so that's my Protein for the day.

i AGREE 100% with Meggie! You will feel no restriction with liquids as they will run right thru you! I was starving all of the time on liquids and had no problem getting them down.

I could and still can drink anything without fail, but give me an egg or chicken and I can not eat 1/4 c. It is weird! I can not eat nearly what I should be eating at 5 weeks out. But, I do eat what I can and know it will get better!

You are doing fine and as long as it doesn't hurt, keep doing what you are doing and follow your rules! You will do great!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
