Losing and Gaining the Same Two Pounds

Recommended Posts

I was so happy to get down to 191 by my fifth week. My weight had been moving steadily downward since my two-week pre-op diet. I really thought I was going to avoid that famous stall.

Well, ever since I got a lower respiratory infection I have gained and lost from 191-193 over and over for a little over a week. I have had to cut back on exercise, because when I get hot I start coughing until I gag. I am having to force myself to eat because I just don't want it--especially in the mornings with all the drainage. I'm coming to the last four days of my steroids and two more days of my Zpak. I really thought I would be much better by now.

Has any body been sick like this with something completely unrelated to surgery and found that it really put a wrench into their weight loss? Other than making sure I get all my fluids in, any ideas? I was able to get down 1/2 egg with diced ham, cheese and tomatoes for Breakfast, so I really am trying to make sure that what little I do eat is Protein rich. I had some pulled beef for lunch by itself. It was BBQ flavored but only had 1.5 carbs in the amount I ate.

Encouragement and advice is welcome!

Wow a 50lb loss is great and in 6 weeks!? I'm sure the steroids aren't helping your weight and given you've lost so much weight in such little time I'm not surprised that you've stalled. Quit weighing until you've been off the steroids for a while and have been well enough to exercise for say a week.

You've done amazingly and you just need to give yourself a break until your better. rolleyes.gif

You have done brilliantly to get to - 50lb so soon, and I agree that the steroids will probably be a big factor in you hitting a bit of a slow down, however I've found the 50lb mark in itself has been the issue for me, I got to - 48/49lb, and stalled, then I cracked it and hit -50lb, and for the last couple of weeks I have been going up and down the same 2lb! I think that our bodies do just get to a point where they have to stop and re-adjust.

It is so hard, especially when you aren't feeling well anyway, but most people really do have this, and it does pass!

Hang in there - hide the scales for a couple of weeks, and if you don't already start to measure, I found that in the month I have lost least weight I have lost most inches, so something is happening even when the scale refuses to agree

Thanks for your replies! Actually the 50 pounds total is from January until today. But, yes, the majority came off during the pre-op diet and now. I guess I've gotten spoiled with the rate it was falling off!

I had not even thought about the steroids causing the problem. But that really does make sense. I know when I had my "big tummy" and would take steroids, I would eat like a pig. I guess since I can't eat, the steroids are just hanging on to everything I have.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
