Vitamin E 800 IU is recommended for all fatty liver patients - Milk Thistle is OK but not a proven help....it won't hurt !

Thanks for that, I didn't know about the Vit E. It's funny about Milk Thistle, it is not promoted in the UK but in Eastern Europe its a staple medicine for liver problems like Hep C. I know a Polish chap who was treated with interferon and he was put on silymarin to help support his liver so its not just the Czech Republic.

I am sure it helps my liver as I really deserve some humdinger hangovers but they never materialise since I started the milk thistle! I know I am a bad girl :P

Good luck!! I am an ICU nurse and I was concerned that I would be someone who had complications. Too much knowledge can make it difficult to be a patient. My surgery was almost one month ago and I have not had any issues. Like you, I had a BMI of 36 and was self pay. I hope you have an uneventful recovery!

Well, the day is almost here-June 13th-...I decided several months ago to do something about my excess weight- yes I tried diets, Slim 4 Life, and lost about 35 lbs and felt better but went backup to 228- I am on the low BMI side for the VSG at 35 but have had a host of medical issues relating to my obesity. I researched the data and chose the VSG. I had thought about going to Mexico but when I thought about all the unforeseen issues that have arisen in patients I have seen here in the US, I decided to stick with the US medical system. For example, if an artery was nicked , do I really want to get blood from the Mexican blood bank system and get Hep C or HIV ? Doubt it !

I am nervous as it is tomorrow-as a gastro MD, I see patients who are what I would describe as a gastric cripple - from gastric surgery's that were performed for all the right reasons but have had terrible complications...I don't want that from a purely elective procedure . My eating habits will change--no doubt..smaller portions mainly. My plan is to keep this up to give an MD's perspective of the surgery and to answer any questions. I live alone and the meal preparation and my hectic schedule will be an issue. I bought a Magic Bullet that I hope will make things easier- planning ahead is the key. I'll keep you posted and wish me good luck !

GastroMD -- from the perspective of a medical professional, why did you elect to have VSG over all the other procedures out there? What about it stood out from the other options?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
