My surgeon had no problem with coffee at all and I was able to get all liquids in from the get-go. I drink my standard 1-2 cups/daily and then get going on the Water. I'm 10 weeks out. But I had coffee probalby 3 days after surgery with no problems.....

thanks so much for all the excellent information- will probably take 2 weeks to wean off- i work graveyard and drink coffee or energy drinks most of my shift and it maes me nervous to think i won't be able to do it!

It's only temporary ... This was hard for me to accept too... But it's only temporary... I really feel bad for the smokers ...I don't smoke but I know how ugly that situation can get...

Believe it or not I was dreading post-op because I wouldn't be able to walk outside to go smoke. However, considering I remember very little of my time there and the whole first day and night was a total blur, I guess I didn't miss it or b***h that I wanted to go have one. So, smokers out there don't be afraid, you won't even know you're missing it the first day. Second day you can get up and walk so then you can go outside LOL

I was also given the no coffee rule when I started my 2 week pre-op diet. I must have looked crushed as the Doctor then questioned how much I drank. When I told him 5-6 cups a day he told me to immediately switch to Decaf coffee and take 2 Tylenol with my first cup in the morning. I did this for 5 days and never experienced a headache. I am now 9 weeks post-op and still drink 2-3 cups of decaf coffee per day. I don't plan to go back to regular coffee for at least a year post-op, maybe never.

Does anyone have a great brand of Decaf they enjoy? I have been a coffee addict even as a child. I am more sad that I can't have my morning coffee, than the food I am missing. I tried Folgers decaf and Starbucks and do not like either one.

But I also have a second question: I am 10 days post op and I think my taste buds are out of whack. Nothing seems to taste like it used to. Has anyone experienced this?

I was able to switch to Decaf but I can't find any kind of "cream" that isn't loaded with carbs. I cannot drink it black, and I don't want to use all of my carb allowance on coffeemate. I would love to to hear what others use...

Hi- I feel your Pang!

I was Mr. coffee...

That was the first to go off THAT list, day one after orientation.

I started out by mixing half decaf in my container of coffee- I know your thinking DECAF- YUK!

yea mee too... 35 years...or more.

when that got half way down(1 week) I mixed in another half decaf, and again, about 1 month and I was drinking decaf-

the biggest hang-p I have is making sure when I order that I say DECAF.

I loves me coffee- I don't need that buzz.

on the bright side- My BP has never been lower...

I am now a take it or leave it-

I have maybe a cup every other day- although it is for the enjoyment not the need.

And so i go to a sleep study class- half way through, 3 people take a break (including the RT, and get coffee- the small room was filled with wonderful smells- 1 gal even ate a burrito.

I was really put off, a two hour class and these people couldn't wait?

If you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep on getting what you've always got.

Try using FF Half and half, then add splenda. If you like flavors, you can try flavored liquid Stevia or the sugar free flavored syrups.< /p>

When I have my morning Protein shake, I mix 1 scoop of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury vanilla with the coffee to use similarly to Creamer - it gives the coffee a creamy taste AND gets you some Protein with only a few grams of carbs - 4 grams with 1 of that being dietary Fiber.

Another thing to try is Almond Milk - tastes a little weird on its own but in coffee I couldn't tell the difference between it and skim milk, and it is pretty low-carb too. The brand I tried is called Almond Dream and only has 3 grams of carbs with 1 of that being dietary Fiber per 1-cup serving, so the amount you would use as creamer in coffee would be less than 1 gram.

Good luck!

I am/was a coffee maniac! I had at least 3-4 cups a day (work at a hospital and up all hours) I was worried about the headaches from no coffee too! Well the first day and 1/2 you are going to be so goofy from the pain meds you won't get a h/a and won't think about not having any coffee anyway! The next couple of days you are going to be so concerned with drinking crystal light etc...you really won't miss it. I am 1 month out and do have 1/2 cup of real coffee each morning (I justify it by saying it is the only way I reward myself for taking the vitamins) :) Good luck you will be fine! I have lost 38 lbs (10 were presurgery) and am feeling great! COFFEE LOVERS UNITE! :) AHHAHA

LOL I know it's crazy, but use Whole Cream or Whipping Cream. Yes, it's a bit pricier but you don't use very much at all! This is what Atkins recommends for low carb dieting ;)

I am a DIE HARD coffee drinker, and I was able to quit drinking coffee about 2 weeks before surgery. At about 3 months, I started drinking it again with no problem. I think you will be just fine (I was terrified of quitting coffee, too!)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
