BCBS appeal was approval - BMI 35 SLEEVE

Recommended Posts

I won my appeal from blue cross blue shield. Two weeks ago, I was rejected by my insurance company for the gastric sleeve because they declared my bmi 35 was too low..for the surgery it has to be 40. I'm very thankful to my wonderful bariatic insurance coordinator who fought on my behalf because I have high blood pressure. I am so happy I will be a sleevey soon. They are calling me tomorrow to schedule my surgery...yesssss I feel like a new beginning. I use to be very athletic but I injured my knee over time in which I have developed arthritis and if I don't lose 60 to 80 lbs I will need a knee replacement by 55. So now I can save my knee, and save myself...yes.

This is very intersting to me. I have just been denied by BCBS of MI because of my BMI. It's 41. They said no because they said it was too low. What did you have to do for the appeal? I too have a diagnosis of high blood pressure. I will have to call my coordinator tomorrow. BCBS is my secondary. My primary said yes but it is 80/20 but my out of pocket is $1500.

Congrats on your appeal! I also won an appeal with Anthem Blue Cross here in California. I'm doing a band to sleeve revision, and they originally denied me becausse my BMI was too low without co-morbidities, but seeing as I lost my band when I delivered my son (totally out of my control) they overturned the decision and approved me. My BMI is 37, so I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to go back to my "bariatric" way of life :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
