I know this isn't the prettiest topic but I've noticed since upping Protein I am very constipated. This morning I was in agony and it really worried me a little. I took stool softening fibre cubes last night, which obviously moved the stools along but didn't soften them greatly!

I don't want to start eating masses of fruit a day, although some would be good. I'm just wondering what the best fibre rich foods/supplements are.

I used to take senekot which did some of the trick.

Is it worth trying milk of magnesia?

I have never had that problem so much, but I think it's because I have a couple of items in my daily food routine that help me out. I eat a packet of high Fiber oatmeal with flax every day. I also eat at least one serving of yogurt every day (you might want to try Activia). Since surgery, I only "go" once every other day or once every 3 days.

Sorry to hear about your discomfort, and I hope you get some relief soon.

I found it was not possible for me to eat enough roughage to clear this up, I instead rely on Mirilax, 1/2 cap daily. It has been an issue for me for decades so it's ongoing for me.

This is a totally new problem for me, too--since having my gallbladder out 15 years ago, I pretty much was living with the "other," and to have Constipation following the sleeve is a new problem!! I tried a couple of meds but settled on Colace (50 mg) as a gentle and reliable solution, until I can eat the sorts of foods that I used to enjoy for Fiber. Can't WAIT until I can have natural fiber in fruits and veggies!!!! So totally craving salads!

But yeah, Colace is it for me.

I had the same problem and my surgeon told me to use Milk of Magnesia (gross!!!!) and if that didn't work to try a glycerin suppository. He said that once I am four weeks out I should start on some sort of fiber supplement.

Miralax is good - Quaker Oats has a high fiber oatmeal that is really good, plus get some benefiber and add it to your Water (up to 3 times a day) - if you don't already, start eating yoplait greek yogurt every other day to every day and that should get things moving!

I use a Tablespoon of Metamusel in my Protein Drink each morning, and often eat one serving of something made from Bobs Red Mill low carb baking mix.. this morning I had two corn fritters. It is packed with fiber and never fails me!

I've used miralax(actually used it today) and milk of magnesia. The milk of magnesia works alot faster but I didn't feel like I needed immediate relief so I used miralax. The milk of magnesia helped me out alot my 2nd week post op cause I hadn't had a bowel movement since before surgery and I felt like a new person afterwards lol.

Dulcolax is a stool softener and not a laxative so it won't make you go, just soften things up so when you do go it's not so er...traumatic?

LOL you know what I mean!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
