Hunger Pain - when does it stop?

Recommended Posts

I am 1 week post surgery and now that most of the surgical pain is gone, I am left with horrible hunger pain. The liquids I am allowed do little to help. Also, I seem to have no restriction when it comes to liquids. I'm sure that will change when I go to solid food. Anyway, when will these hunger pains subside? Right now I dread another week of this.

Are you on a PPI? The acid can cause false hunger, If you are already on a PPI try adding Protein to anything you can drink, it will help with hunger.

Liquids will not give you any satisfaction as they will run right thru you. You will feel better restriction as you move to solids.

However, I am on solids and although I do not feel as hungry as I did on liquids and puree's, I do still feel hunger. That, for me has not went away!

Good luck to you!

Kelly

You have to take your acid reducer. At this point, I don't think your stomach is capable of "hunger pains". The nerves are severed and there is not the normal hunger function. WHat you can feel, though, is acid and gas. Get some Gas-x strips and take them a couple of times a day and see if that helps. Also, get some Nexium from the doc. Or you can try Prilosec. I am taking Zegerid OTC, but the pill is huge and there is no way you could get it down at one week out. I had the dissolvable Nexium after I left the hospital, but I think you can only get it in MX. Ask the doc for an Omeprazole based acid reducer right away - it will help with the rumbling.

I take Nexium twice a day and still feel hungry. I don't think the hunger is as bad as it was pre-op, but I do still get hungry. I go to see my Dr. on the 16th for my follow up appointment and will let him know. Maybe I need to take a different PPI??

Kelly :(

My hunger went away around 3 months post op;. My opinion is that the more I drink fluids the less hungry I get.

I have also started taking some Gas-ex and Malox. Seemed to help for a bit but the pain returns quickly. Another week of this is going to be difficult.

Ok I registered with the site just to find answers to this question. I am three weeks post op and I feel like I am starving every two hours. I take Prilosec twice a day. This is not helping. I do still have terrible gas so maybe there is some truth that it is not hunger, but this is really annoying. I saw the post that said the hunger went away after three months. Is it common to take that long. The whole thing just makes me scared that I wont develop good eating habits because every time I turn around I'm hungery which is exactly how I was before.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
