Help, I;m struggling with wanting to eat all my favorite foods prior to surgery. I know i should be preparing for pre-op but that little devil in my head says go ahead eat all those things that you won't be able to eat after surgery. Anyone have some good advise to help me get back in control.

I do not have any good advise but can offer comfort that I did the same thing. I start my pre-op diet tomorrow. I have eaten everything in sight for the past week. I know it was totally wrong but I guess I felt the need to say good bye to some things I will not be eating for quite some time. I do believe that once I see the weight falling off I will be so excited and motivated that I will just about forget about all those foods or at least forget about eating them in such large quantities! Good luck to you! I hope you find a better answer than I did.

I start my pre op on June 9th. I also have been having that urge to eat the things I love the most. It is my way of saying goodbye. I have not eaten in quantity. just tasting is helping me. I had actually lost 6 lbs prior to this week, so 1-2 lbs this week isn't the worst. Don't beat yourself up.I know there is no turning back once i have this surgery. I have gone to some support groups offered by my surgeon, which everyone should do by the way, and one remark that a patient post op 5 years told me was that food may be your friend,, but your friends are trying to kill you. Good advice. I have been going through the " I wonder what am I doing?" phase. Then I look at myself in the mirror and tell myself, "you have been trying to do this by yourself your whole adult life with no success". I need to get this weight off. I love food. But I love myself more, so I will be a good girl and quit eating myself to death.

Good luck to you. We will be going through this together.

I don't have any advice. Maybe spend some time thinking about it before you get the surgery and get your mind wrapped around the idea and not just made up about having the surgery.

I made my mind up that I wasn't going to be fat anymore and that was that. Seriously. The thought of eating something bad makes me feel bad now. In the last 4 days I have sat through others eating fast food, chinese and pizza without desiring it. At. All.

I am so badly sunburned and mostly just ticked off about it because it's hindering my exercising. (the extra showers)

You will be able to eat the foods you like in moderation at some point. You're not saying good bye to eating, you're saying hello to being healthy.

Take some time to really think about why you eat and how that will effect your outcome post op. Start working on your psyche now.

Hi!

I did the same thing and it still wasn't enough. When I started my pre-op diet 8 days ago, I had a meltdown the first day.:(:o Yes, crying, anger, starving tummy, ....just couldn't see how I was ever going to be able to do it. But after about 3 days, my hunger went away and I was happy with my 4 Protein shakes and one tiny meat and greens a day. Do I want real food...oh yes! But I'm okay with what I have to have. I had seen others post similar things about going crazy at first then the hunger kind of goes away and your content AND didn't beleive it. Well, they were right! Ha!

The only advice I really have is maybe just let go of one thing at a time before your diet starts. Like for me, I should have given up my coffee, cream, and sugar....my McDonald's large Cokes...you get the point. Pick things that are going to be the hardest for you to give up because if you just go cold turkey on everything just like I did, you may just go nuts! I'm surprised I didn't break and binge because in the past, that's what I would have done. I suppose the thought of something going wrong in surgery because I didn't do my part was enough to keep from endulging in the wrong things.

One more thing, maybe add some things that you don't do on a regular basis that will be something that you will have to do after the diet and the surgery happen. Like, drinking all your Water, walking 20 minutes a day, taking your chewable Vitamins, liquid B-12, calcuim, etc. I did all of that except I still haven't started the walking part. I'm bound and determined to start that in the next day or two.

I hope this helps.

I started my pre-op diet 7 days ago. I have surgery on June 14th. My diet said to eat 1000 calories high Protein per day. I thought I'd have a difficult time but it hasn't been too bad. I'm on a trip with three other couples and they don't stop eating. Before my pre-op diet began I felt the same way as you--eating all the things I thought I'd miss, but when the time came to begin the diet, I just shut down and haven't cheated at all. On the other hand, I'm eating tuna, and chicken at lunch and dinner because they are high protein and low calorie. I just keep tabs on the calorie count. Good luck with everything.

Thanks for the support. Reading that many of you had the same behaviors but were able to go on and complete the pre-opt without set backs is comforting

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
