post op difficulty and discouraged

Recommended Posts

Hello I am 5 days post op and have had difficulty with consuming what I need 2 Protein wise..the 3 ounces at a time is hard right now..I'm doing about 2 ounces..I have all the Vitamins, my own meds and meds they gave me to take wich makes me nauseous and fills me up..trying to consume all Water is challenging at best and now I am going back to strictly Protein Shakes. I have had cravings ...not hungry but wanted cake my daughter was eating..even took bite of a cookie she has and now hope I didn't mess anything up..I have this horrible taste in my moth from time to time and still have pain and am sleeping on couch up right...I know this is a lot,but I am hoping someone has experianced these things and has some words of encouragement or advice...thank you

I know that everyone says to get in all your Protein, but I completely understand how difficult that is. I'm about 2.5 weeks out and I am still having a lot of trouble getting in everything that I need. Today I had about 3 ounces of food total for the entire day, a Protein Shake, and 1.5 bottles of Water. Bare minimum of what I need. I am completely stuffed right now and the thought of putting anything else into my body makes me feel physically ill. You're only 5 days out, don't stress yourself out too much worrying about getting everything in, it gets better little by little.

Hi, you are only 5 days post op and it is understandable that you are having trouble getting everything in right now. Especially all the Protein. Focus on hydration first right now and get some protein in, but you probably still have some swelling in your tummy too, so you may not be able to get in all the required protein just yet. I am 3 wks out today and although I had no swelling or nausea, I still have to work all day long, starting early each morning to get my fluids in. And I need to get more protein in, but I'm doing pretty good there.

I'd like to caution you on giving into temptation right now on the Cookies or anything like that, to protect your staple line. I know how you feel, I have seen things I wanted to taste, but I haven't been hungry yet at all. The acid reducer I take really helps with nausea and false hunger that acid will induce. If you're not on one yet, I recommend it. I know you are taking other things and it seems like a chore, but it really does help.

Try not to get discouraged and take it one day at a time. Like everyone says, it gets better everyday!!

I am feeling almost exactly the same way and I am 4 days post op. I haven't had nausea until this morning.

Hydrating yourself is the most important thing at this point. You are NOT going to be able to hit those Protein goals this early in the game! So, don't even worry about it. Focus on water! You don't want to be dehydrated.

I am a month out today and am still not getting all the Protein in I should and I am fine! The more you are able to consume later, the more protein you will be able to get in. Don't rush yourself. Take your time. You will get there!

Kelly :)

I had the most TERRIBLE time after surgery. I stayed in the hospital for 3 nights because I couldn't drink anything :( ...I was planning on being the perfect patient, and when that didn't happen, I was extremely depressed because I couldn't get down the Water, Protein, or Vitamins, etc. I was super hard on myself :(

I finally said the heck with it. And concentrated on one thing at a time. Hydration is the most important and so that's what I did, LITTLE by LITTLE. The rest came later. Just take it one day at a time, and DON'T be too hard on yourself. It gets better with each new day :)

This is perfectly normal. I wish the docs were more honest about the first 2 weeks but the fact is it easier to say what you "should" do vs what is possible when they preform the surgery but have not actually gone throught it themselves. ( kinda like a guy doctor telling you what you should feel like post hysterectomy or child birth) .

Concentrate on liquids, clear and your protien shakes,,, all will be well and check in here often!

I'm 5 days post op and can get my Protein in but struggling with the Water. My doc said make my prot shakes (60g) for the day and split it into 3. Get those in and anything

else is extra. When 8oz of milk is 8g and prot powder is 20-24 it's pretty easy but hard to get water in. Should I not worry and just keep trying? Thanks!

I am 1 week post op and not on full liquids yet. I was in the hosp for 5 nights due to not being able to get in enough fluids. I am home now, but still having issues with getting enough Water. I can't drink Water alone. So what I did was buy Smart Water and use it in everything I make. It has electrolytes to help you stay hydrated. So I might get in a small cup of broth every 4 hours but since I use the Smart Water I dont feel dehydrated and my urine is partially clear - always a good sign. Keep pushing, and I will too!! We will get better everyday!!!

:cheer2:

I was told that yes even though its important to get your Protein in, it is more important at this time to be hydrated :) Im also 5 days post op. Struggling with what is ok to eat,but hanging in there. I think im over the Protein shakes . I used to love them but now i think its sooooo sweet!

My Doc has a store attached to his office. I buy all my protien stuff there, 'cause I KNOW without a doubt that he approves of it - it has his name all over it!! Here is the web site, where you can buy it, too:

https://cmhva.infusionsoft.com/cart/store.jsp?view=1&i=24&navicat=24

The "Weight & Inches" shakes have 29g of Protein, and replace a full meal. Most of the other stuff has 15g of protein.

I liked the chocolate Weight & Inches.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
