Problems swallowing calcium capsules?!

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

My surgery was 10 days ago and I have been scared to try and take my Calcium capsules, my Dr. said to open them up and put them in my Protein Shakes I tried that but it tastes sooo gritty, YUCK.

So. I swallowed two yesterday, then I sorta burped and all the powder was up in my throat, REALLY YUCK.:mmph:

I figured mabey I had too muck liquid in my tummy, so I tried this morning on a completley empty stomache and the same thing happened.

Im still on a liquid diet, so I dont know if this happens with food sometimes or what?

Any suggerstions? Any liquid calcium, I am supposed to have 3500 mg's a day!

Other than that everything has been going great!! Just wish these incisions would go away! Im still quite sore with certain movements.

THANKS for any help!!

stephinie ask your Dr about chewing Tums for the extra calcium..instead of the capsules! My Dr. told me to chew 2 every morning and I never have problems with that!

By the way congrats and welcome to bandland and I'm wishing you lots of success!!! Keep us posted on how you are doing!!

Stephanie, I agree with her. YOu can go to chewable via another route. If you can't get chewable then get a pill type so you can split them. I have been splitting my meds and so far I haven't felt them go down. Good luck. Welcome to bandland.

I bought chewable Calcium, they don't taste too bad. I also got a free sample of some chocolate, sugar free chewables, not too bad.

I got a liquid Calcium at costco. It doesn't taste to bad straight out of the bottle, but it does taste good when mixed with Crystal Light. I got the ok from the doc. May want to check that out.

I put my capsules in a little glass of Water and swirl it around for a minute. If you look at it closely you can see it get a kind of saggy look to it - kind of like an overripe grape looks. At that point it's soft and slippery enough to swallow. No problems.

I order Adora Calcium over the internet. It is like a piece of candy. You can get milk chocolate or semi sweet chocolate. There is a small number of calories in each one--but it is worth it. I couldn't stand the gritty chewable calcium or tums. They are sort of expensive, but so was lap band surgery. We're worth it.

At the recent Nurse Practitioner's conference Nature Made gave me a sample of chewable Calium 600mg per table with 200 I U Vitamin D. They are a cherry, orange, mixed berry. They taste really good. I haven't looked for them at the drug store but look for them at a drug store.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
