My surgeon said that my drain (once I've been sleeved) will likely be removed on the 5th day.

Just went to my pre-op physical yesterday, and she said they remove it right before I leave the hospital the day following surgery! :)

Hi, I had a drain for a week after surgery. I had to measure the output and keep a log. There was no pain involved. It is a tube with an egg shaped bulb at the end that collects the Fluid. The doctor gave me a gizmo to wear around my neck that I could attach the bulb part to. I wore that for awhile, and then I began just sticking the bulb part in my bra cup. It was easier. When I went into the hospital, I brought a large safety pin with me so that I could pin the drain to my hospital gown. Someone on this link had recommended it. I'm so glad that I did. I used it.

I went to see my surgeon yesterday for the last time before my surgery. I forgot to ask one question so maybe you guys can help me. Will I get the drain tube removed before I leave the hospital or do I have to come home with it?

I also had Dr. Teel, he took mine out right before I was released to go home. For me that incision hurt the worst and left the most noticable scar since it's not taped together like the others were. This one they just pull the tube out and and cover with gauze. It's not as horrible as it sounds because you are still under the pain meds. I think the worst part about the drain tube is that they attach it with stitches and they have to cut those right before removing it , (the nurse does that). Then Dr. Teel comes in and pulles it out. I remember he jokingly said I was stressing out way too much about the removal of the tube. He was right. It didn't hurt really, it was just an odd feeling.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
