Ok, I am 10 weeks post op and had to have a TB PPD skin test at work. The skin test came back positive with a size of 11mm. They sent me for a chest xray which looked fine. They said because of my surgery I am at a higher risk of developing active TB and should take NINE months worth of the the antibiotic. My issue is my doctor never mentioned that I would be at a higher risk has anyone else heard this?

Wow - thanks for posting that. I would check with your surgeon and PCP for sure.

Since you posted this, I did a quick google search and found this article: http://journals.lww.com/infectdis/fulltext/2001/05000/tuberculosis_after_gastric_weight_loss_surgery__a.8.aspx

It's a bit dry (and uses several technical terms), but it does say there is an increased risk of TB after gastric weight loss surgery.

Very informative article. I just wish my doc had mentioned the increased risk. I am not looking forward to NINE months of antibiotic treatment.

Sorry, but I am confused...your PPD was positive but the chest X-ray was negative and they want you to take INH? I'd get a second opinion if I were you. INH is kinda hard on the liver

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
