Still Pre-Op Going for Job Interview Thursday

Recommended Posts

I posted a similar post in pre-op then I got to thinking I should ask you post-opers. :) I have a job interview Thursday...State Job..great benefits...I really need this job. Do I tell them during the interview I'm having surgery in a couple of weeks? I could probably have surgery as early as the latter part of next week.

Should I wait until I get a job offer then tell them I must have a medically necessary surgery? Due to the problems I'm having with diabetes it kind of is. This is a desk job, no heavy lifting, so how much time would I need to be off work? I'm guessing two weeks?

Thanks in advance for you advice.

Absolutely do NOT mention it in the interview! They want to know right now what you can do for the company, not what you need the company to do for you. Once you have an offer, then negotiate the time off for a surgery you already had planned. No need to tell them what kind.

Once you have an offer, they are invested in hiring you and will be reluctant to remake the decision. If you put stuff like out there beforehand, it usually is a reason to go with another candidate.

yeah, for sure do not say anything. I started a new job around my surgery and I had meant to have my surgery inbetween ending the first job and starting the next. Then my surgery got cancelled and rescheduled for when I was already at the new job. When I got the new date I just went to the scheduler and told her I was having a surgery soon and I didn't have much notice and they worked around it. I took only a week off and that was plenty, and I have a busy job where I'm on my feet all day. 2 weeks is probably better, but I didn't want to push it. with luck, you can have the interview and it may still take a couple weeks to get into the job anyway! good luck!

NOOOO!!! If they know ahead of time that they're going to have to work around you taking time off (even if it's just a week), I can just about bet that'll kill your chances, especially with so many people competing for the same jobs these days. Later on when you need to ask for the time, you can tell them whatever you want, from the whole truth to nothing at all. Good luck with the interview! :)

Do not say anything. It will most likely take a week for an offer. Then with background screening and typical HR paperwork, it could take at least another week. You can negotiate your start date, they do not need to know. You will be well on your road to recovery by your first day.

Good Luck.

No, don't tell. It is also illegal for them to ask. Wait for the interview to happen and see if you get an offer. Government stuff alsways takes a long time. You may not get an offer for a month. Once you get the offer, tell them you have a prior commitment and the date. They should be able to work around it.

Do not tell anything like that in an interview!!!

Good luck!

Never discuss anything during a job interview that doesn't directly pertain to the job itself, and especially nothing about your personal circumstances or preferences, ever! Never ever ever.

You don't owe them anything!

Most nice people try to be "fair" to their employer, but you should only be as "fair" to them as they are to you. Employment is not about friendship, it's about the exchange of value (work) for money (income). The rules of friendship do not apply.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
