Will my swollen ankles go away?

Recommended Posts

So, as I gained weight, my ankles have gotten to the point that they are swollen all the time. I am really hoping/praying that this will get better when I lose weight. I've lost 78 lbs, and they don't seem to be any better.... is there hope? I want to wear heels and have it look cute!

Yup. One day soon, you'll look down and notice a difference. My doctor told me "a watched pot never boils. So goes the same with your big________ ( insert body part)". It'll happen I'm sure. No worries

I am sure they will. I thought my back would never shrink (I had/have two fat rolls that look likeangel.gif wings... Terrible!confused_smile.gif), but hubby made me notice that they are going down too! It's taking longer than the rest of my body, but it is! Maybe you haven't noticed? Have you taken a photo of themcamera.gif, so you can compare it with other photos you might take every 10/20 lbs you lose?

Are you trying with body creams too? There are some that that have cooling effect, with the hot season coming it might help too...

(I am using reducing cream on my back as well)

Oh, thanks, Bilka!

I didn't think about the cooling cream. It seems like it's partly fat and partly inflammation, so maybe that would help. Also, you may be right that it's slightly better, and I just don't realize it. I'll try taking a photo to see if I can track any differences. Great ideas! Fingers crossed!

I had chubby ankles as well, and while I lost the fat and flubber, I still have huge ankle joints. My 6ft tall husband(he has big hands) can not wrap his hand around my ankle completely, and while they are not fat/swollen, they are still huge. I still have big, flat feet too. I only wear a size 7-7.5 and can wear most normal width shoes, but those slinky heels with the super narrow bottoms are not for me. My feet hang over the side of at the arch and at the corner of my feet where my toes end (if that makes sense). I wear tons of wedges, and other heels, but those slinky shoes are out for the most part. My surgeon said my bones grew more dense to accommodate my fatness all of those years, and I have big elbows, knees, and ankle joints.

HI,

After surgery I had alot of swelling in my calves, ankles and feet(4 months worth). It got to the point that it looked out of porportion with the weight I had lost in my theighs. All of a sudden they have gone down and stayed down! I think it is just our body conforming to our new metabolism! They will go down and get ready to buy new shoes! All of my shoes are too big! I am going on a shopping spree this weekend!

It will happen!

I too had edema every night for the last several years. My feet and ankles would swell to the point that the skin got shiny because it was stretched so tightly. I started to wear compression hose which helped a lot but I would still get swelling after taking them off, the hose would get uncomfortable after a hard days work. It was that way for a few months post op till I lost about 100 pounds then started to subside. Now I only notice a moderate amount of swelling after a hard days work, nothing like what it used to be.

Thanks for your feedback, guys! I'm hoping it's more edema and less large bones. Mostly, they look just puffy all the time, so I think it's edema. Also, my left ankle is much more swollen than my right, so I think it's definitely some kind of inflammation. I don't expect to have tiny ankles again, but it would be nice to wear some at least *somewhat* sexy heels! (I know, Rootman, this is probably *not* your concern, but thanks for sharing!).

I too am having the same problem with swollen legs/ankles. I have lost almost 50 pounds and while I have noticed they are not as swollen they still haven't gone down completely. I was online researching this problem and came across your post. I just wondered if the swelling finally got any better for you and if not did you find out anything else aboout the cause?

Hi Maggie,

I have now lost 91 lbs, and my swelling has gone down a lot, but not completely. I talked to my doc about it, and she didn't really give me much of a sense of the cause, but she said she thought it was due to inflammation. She suggested I wear an ankle brace for a month to reduce the swelling and to take alleve. I can't say I've been consistent with either! But, when I do those things, the swelling seems to be better. For me, it's much worse in my left ankle, which I injured a long time ago, so this might just be something that I have to live with.... I hope that helps a little...

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
