I am 1 week post op and gained almost 9lbs in surgery that is finally off as of this morning.

Does anyone have any advice for the mental hunger?

Its not that Im hungry at all but living in a house with people eating all day long makes me feel like Im missing out on something.

I even thought today I should of waited to have the surgery after my 2 kids go off to college in Aug. At least that way I would see everyone eating all day long.

Im feeling frustrated with my thoughts and want them to go away.

Maybe when I actually see some weight loss I will be feeling better about doing this. That 9lbs added was really bad for my mind.

Anyone that thinks this is easy is so wrong. This is just a tool and I will have to work on my mental hunger for the rest of my life.

Thanks for listening/reading. I just needed to tell someone.

Robin

Robin, I am also one week post op tomorrow. I was just going to write a post about this. I am anxious to hear what everyone has to say. I hate feeling this hunger! I keep thinking about food. My family needs to eat so I can't just stay away from the food! It is so hard. I feel like I am grieving my food and it makes me a little sad.

You are correct, this is not easy but I know in the end it will be worth it! Hang in there.

I had surgery on Thursday and can say that I too feel the almost sadness when it's time for my family to eat. It hasn't been too bad until today when my kids came back from my moms house. I did however cook their meal and sat at the table with my Clear Liquids and just enjoyed talking to them. It was hard but I have to remember why I've done this. I might also add that grocery shopping is sad too. It's not that I like shopping, but that there are so many things there which I would have loved to take "just one bite" of. Hang in there. We can do this together!!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing that, Robin. I haven't had my surgery yet but I know I would be devastated if I didn't know that you gain weight first from all the fluids. My mind is my worst enemy!! I am still scared about not being able to eat but it helps to know that other people are doing it...good for you for getting through it! I saw some posts on you tube that some people feel much better about "missing" the food after about 2 weeks. I sure hope that is true! Keep up the great work!

I played little mental games with myself about food, like "Pizza---yeah, pizza...I know what pizza tastes like...I can have pizza again, just not right now...I'd rather be thin when I eat pizza...I don't want to screw up my surgery...Guess I'll wait...maybe go in my room and listen to music...take a shower...read...brush the dog..."

Anyway, you get the idea. Just sub whatever food is tempting you for pizza and go away and do something else. It's worth it, I promise, when the pounds start falling off you.

I had to walk away last night in fact. My daughter made Pasta carbonara, one of my favourite things in the world. I smelled the bacon cooking and the cilantro being chopped and I had to leave the room. I went in my room and read. It was SO HARD to walk away from that. I wanted it but I just kept telling myself I'm past that for now. I'm better than that now. I'm going to be healthy now. AND I'll be able to have a few bites someday, just not TOday.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
