Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any issues with their uvula after surgery. I'm 9 months out and it has never really ever healed :(

I'm going to have it checked out this coming Friday.

Thanks!

So, I have had no complications with my uvula- I really just clicked on this because I was curious what exactly the "uvula" is. Since the post didn't answer, I googled it. And, did you know it can pierced?

I learn something new every day! Sorry, I offered you zero help, but I found that so fascinating that I had to share. :)

Good luck in getting answers!

Amanda

What happened to your throat punching bag?

No, it was my anesthesiologist and the bougie :( I should have known, when he told me not to worry and said he was going to treat me like family, UGH!

Anyway, I can literally feel it hanging at the back of my throat and it causes me to swallow hard and is a real pain!!! They keep telling me it will heal, but here I am. I hope to get some answers soon.

I just find it ODD that I'm the ONLY person this has happened to...SO WEIRD!!!

What happened to it? Did they nick it or something during intubation?

Edited....posted right after your explanation...

That is too bad. I hope it does heal. That would drive me nuts.

Have you been to an Ear Nose and Throat Dr. about it? I think it might help to get their opinion on whether it should have already healed on its on. Good lucksmile.gif

No, but I found your post interesting. For me the only truly painful part of this surgery was my throat. I sounded like I'd chewed sandpaper for 3 days and when I would inhale my throat would catch and hurt like I was being scraped raw. But do you know that I had completely forgotten about that part of the surgery. If someone were to ask me, without having read your post, I would never have mentioned my throat. And I remembered it immediately after because I told friends and co-workers how bad it hurt.

Sometimes I wonder about my memory.

I had horrible issues with mine after a previous surgery. It swelled so large I coughed and it just LAYED on my tongue! I felt like I was choking and couldn't 'swallow' it back. They actually had to raise my feet as high as they could...lowering my head so gravuty would have it fall back off my tongue. It was soooo sore for a long time. I think almost a month till it felt 'normal' to swallow. It sucked and I feel so bad for you. Are you going to see an ENT specialist? Thats who I would think you'd need to see.

Good luck...and honestly, although another surgery is the last thing you probably want, they could just remove it to ease your discomfort. I do hope you find an easier answer. *hugs*

I thought a 'uvulva" was a private part at first!!!! LOL

Seriously, I had lots of throat issues after surgery that resolved themselves. I think an ENT visit would be in order.

Good Luck and Congrats on your success :D :D

I had the same problem but mines healed within a few days or so, when I woke up from surgery I didn't know what it was so I tried to pull it out (yes, I was sooo drugged up) my mom and my boyfriend had to pry my fingers from my mouth. I thought that b/c I had tried to pull mines out it would not ever heal, but it did. I hope that yours heals.

That sucks, sleeve4me. The good news is... I'm pretty sure I read recently about surgeries to correct overly long uvulas. They can be a hazard. Or, in your case, majorly annoying.

Mine has always been real big (tonsils too) and it still hurts & is scratchy, but I'm only a week out.

Good luck to you!

I remember you saying soon after your surgery that the anaesthetist had wrecked your dangly throat bit. I'm shocked it still hasn't healed! Let us know what they say, I hope they can sort it for you!

Did your uvula ever heal? I had VSG in Oct 2010 but just had my gall bladder removed on Thursday 8/4/11. During my most recent surgery the anesthesiologist must have knicked or otherwise severely stretched my uvula, too. It is driving me beyond crazy. In doing a google search of this condition and how long it takes to get better, I ran across your old post. How are you doing now and how long did it take to feel better and what did you do to help?

Thanks!

Lisa

Hi Lisa! I am 11 1/2 months out and my uvula is still not 100% :( ...it is better but not the same as before my sleeve. I was told at my 9 month post op appointment I would need to see the ENT doctor, but I've had so many other appointments to go to I just haven't had time.

I would suggest seeing the ENT ASAP. And please Let me know how it goes. :)

Sooo I just had surgery yesterday 28th March here in NZ and my uvula has been stretched and hanging down my throat as well, it's so irritating and makes swallowing difficult. I asked my anaesthetist who said it would go away in a day or so [emoji24] I hope it does because it's even difficult to talk

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
