1st day home and it has been rough. I got home last night with terrible gas.....I could see my stomach rise with air by the minute. I took the generic gas x along with some pain medication and hoped it would knock me out and it would be all over when I woke up. the gas was better today but I am having trouble drinking. The though of the protene shake makes me ill let alone drinking it makes me gaseous. I got in 1/2 of one today. Hopefully it will get better or I can find a better solution to that shake. Sipping on tea and lemonade works. But if I sip wrong I feel a gas bubble. I hope it gets better with time. It must. I am sure those who went before me experienced the same and lived throught it. I have no other choice now... It is still early so we will see. Just sleeping alot now..

The first few days are the toughest. Everyone post-op has been there, or some variation of there.

Walking really helps to shake the gas out. Did your doctor prescribe an anti-acid (PPI). If not, call and ask for one.

Your most important goal is to stay hydrated. So get your fluids in first, then worry about Protein. I used a one-ounce medicine cup, a measuring cup, and a timer to get my fluids in the first couple of days. Fill the measuring cup so you don't have to hop up and down. Then use it as a pitcher to fill your medicine cup every 15 minutes. Set the timer so you are reminded when your next 15 minutes begins.

For Protein, I found that I tolerate the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powder much better than the Gold Standard. (Note that I'm not slamming the Gold Standard. I tolerated it just fine pre-op when I was testing Proteins and it may be the Lactaid milk that I mixed it with) I also had good luck with Isopure Protein Drink. I don't care for the taste, but it doesn't cause discomfort after I drink it, so who cares?

I'm sending healing thoughts your way!

Take heart, this too shall pass! Almost all of us have experienced the same things and had the same worrisome thoughts! I remember thinking, "whata have I done?" I too found it very difficult to drink anything, it hurt like heck when it hit my stomach, no matter how small the sip. it does get better! Can't say that for the protien shakes after 2 weeks of nothing but them, ha, but like I said "this too shall pass". I know that you are concerned to get the protien in but really the day after surgery just need to be sure you get enough liquid to stay hydrated. You can worry about the protien in a couple of days when you are able to drink better. Try some special K Protein packs for your Water, it has 5 g so that is something until you can handle the shakes. Your lucky that you are able to sleep, I had terrible insomnia..still pretty bad, take it easy on yourself and try to relax, think happy thoughts and take it one day at a time. Each day is a little better than the last. Don't be too concerned if you experience a pretty good degree of weakness next week, that too will get better. You body has been though a lot and it will take some time to adjust physically and emotionally. I was pretty emotional at day 3, I don't know if that is "standard protocol" or if it was just me but if it happens to you don't let it overly concern you. Good luck to you, you will be fine!

Not only did I sleep alot just to make time pass, I had major nightmares my first week. All I can say is Im feeling you. It has been 2 weeks for me but i thought i was going crazy that first week. Couldn't drink all that damn gas was ridiculousness so was the diarrhea and nausea. But GOOD NEWS...get definitely gets better!!! I still get cramps but not much gas. However, im still having problems getting my fluids in and taking my Protein. But i went back for dehydration and you don't want that so drink, drink, drink.

I actually talked to my Dr. today, I think I'm like almost 5 days out now (I've lost count, it's a blur). I'm having a hard time with nausea and diarrhea. He told me to get the Propel Water or gatoraid G2 and take a couple of teaspoons full every 15 minutes. This will get you used to the amount to "sip". Proteins can be very hard on the tummy so I wouldn't worry too much about that right now, worry more about dehydration and get those fluids in.

hope this helps

Everyone is right -- make sure you're getting in your fluids now -- that's most important. I was the same as you -- I was miserable after surgery (some people fly right through, but not me) -- it took me a good 3 weeks to feel almost human. I had horrible gas pains, bad dreams, I could hardly drink . . . I was miserable. But all of that is mostly from your stomach being swelled. When the swelling decreases, you'll start to feel better. For now, just sip, sip, sip. :)

I'm also two days post op. I am with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali.

Day 1 was OK, I didn't feel too bad. You would think it would hurt but it didn't.

Day 2 I couldn't hold anything down and had a lot of problems with acid

Day 3 I don't throw up but acid is a problem.

They though it was gas but meds that work are acid meds

The staff here so nice, it makes coping with this much easier.

In a western country a patient is just an annoyance.

It seems everbody has a different experience with this...we hope we are going to be the lucky ones ....

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
