how long will i need help with my kids?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

I'm tentatively planning on getting VSG in July. My two boys are ages 3 & 1. I'll be flying from PA to TX to get my surgery done. It's way cheaper in TX ($27,000 vs $14,000). Plus, my parents live in TX and can help me with my kids in the immediate days after surgery. So here's my question---how long should I plan on staying in TX after surgery? Is ten days enough? Will I need 2 weeks? How long do you think I'll need help with my two boys. I've had c-sections before but I'm not sure how the pain compares. My biggest concern is getting home to PA...with two kids in tow and at least one layover at the airport. Obviously, I'd just check-in my luggage to save myself the hassle.

Thoughts?

My md has me on weight restrictions of no more than 25lbs for 3 weeks. I'm doing fine after surgery (1week on thursday) but would still have some problems if she wasn't here to help with daily routines. Shell prob stat at least another week just to make sure I don't strain myself.

How long is a piece of string???

Only you know how much time your kids "normally" need and how you respond to being "out of commission". I only needed a week. My husband didn't need but a day. There is no accurate answer, it's dependent on many factors. I'd allow at least 2 weeks, if I HAD to give an answer.

I have 4 kids and have family coming to stay with me for a week. They are taking most of the kids back with them to spend a month with family at the beach. My oldest who is 15 will be staying with me. I'm assuming that will be all I need in the way of help. With your kids being younger, you might want to plan for 2-3 weeks if possible. That's just to avoid having to pick up the little ones. I sure do remember those days!

I'm facing a similar dilema. I have 5 kids ages 17, 14, 13, 7 & 3. My husband will be able to take a few days off work after surgery. I honestly KNOW that the 3 year old and 7 year old will give me trouble. They see a sick mama think its time to take advantage of the situation. :) My 14 & 13 y/o's are great help, but I think its alot of responsibilty to put on them to watch the 2 little ones. I really could use a nanny LOL.

If I were you I'd plan on staying as long as you can. I'm sure there are weight restrictions your doctor will advise you on. Everyone is different. I've met someone that had the surgery and in 2 weeks was back to a physically demanding job. Raising toddlers would qualify :)

Good luck with your surgery :)

I have a 4 and 2 yr old and my mom took the kids for a week then the second week I had my aunt take them to day care for me. There was NO WAY I would be able to stay home with them right after surgery. Kids are pretty demanding and when you're in recovery, you need all the rest and focus you can get!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
