Dr. Kelly in Mexico

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I'm new to this and have really enjoyed reading everyone's stories the past couple of days. I never thought I would consider this but thanks to all of the great stories on here, I am considering surgery with Dr. Kelly in Mexico. I have read and read and I can't seem to find complaints about him or Trish. Everyone has such pleasant experiences. Is there anything that anyone should tell me that I don't know? I would greatly appreciate any responses, even if they are bad ones. Thank you to everyone!

Christy

Hi Christy,

I was just sleeved on 5/16 (11 days ago) and I'm doing great! As of today I am down 14 lbs. I had a wonderful experience. I am very happy I chose to go go with Dr Kelly. He is a skilled dr and they are both caring people. Let me know if you have any specific questions!

I had a great time and (almost) wish I could have surgery again just for the whole experience with the people there. At first I thought that some of the stuff about Trish was overblown, from my email and phone conversations with her prior to going, I wasn't overly impressed, not dissatisfied, just that I didn't see what the big deal was, it wasn't until I was actually there with her and we met and I saw all the things she does, then I knew exactly why people love her so much. I wrote a pretty detailed thing about my experience under "my story".

Christy, i also wanted to add that when you get your surgery date, to look on the threads for your month and you might find someone else going the same day. Griselda, Meepmeep17, and I were all there at the same time and were sleeved the same day. We got to share the experience. It was wonderful and reassuring to me and I enjoyed meeting them. I had my sister go with me too, so it was really nice having a support team to talk to and hang out with. Hope all is well, good luck!

Thanks Kelly! I will definitely do that! Can I just say something? You seem so compassionate and supportive and I must say,I want this done soooo bad but I just finished reading all of these leak stories and I'm thinking to myself "OMG, what am I going to do if this happens to me? How is insurance going to be if I have complications from a surgery done in MX? Are they going to pay the medical bills if something were to go wrong?

It's a genuine fear, about insurance/mexico. It's one of those things that you hope to God doesn't happen, because if your insurance excludes weight loss surgery, it might very well exclude paying for the treatment to repair a leak. I don't think you'd have problems with them paying for dehydration or other things that might be related to the surgery, but could be something else. I knew that was a risk but I weighed it against not having surgery and getting worse in health (which was a definite) and I took the gamble. I felt reassured knowing that Dr. Kelly does leak tests and that he oversews the staple line. He also told me that in his experience, leaks tend to happen in the first few weeks, more than likely the first week. He also said that the area which is more prone to leaks is where the stomach connects to the esophagus and that he goes around this area to make it particularly strong. He said he thought this was something he 'invented' but then when he went to some conferences in the US, he found that there are some US doctors doing the same thing. Nobody can know with any certainty how your surgery will turn out, although the odds of you not having any problems are definitely in your favor. You will be in VERY capable hands.

Thank you so much for the kind words!!! It's nice to hear things like that. I'm very nervous and very anxious at the same time. My insurance covers all of the weight loss surgeries but I have a strong feeling that I will get through the 6 month supervised diet only for insurance to deny me and my out of pocket expense will almost be as much as paying for the surgery. So I am going to take my chances and have the surgery done in Mexico. I'm really excited though---I weighed today and have lost 15 pounds. YAY!! Sorry, I just wanted to tell someone. :) But thank you again for reassuring me that I will be in good hands! I needed that!

Congrats on the 15 lbs, that is awesome!!! Thanks for the compliment, and I know how just how you feel about being scared and nervous and the "what ifs". I am an anxious person in general and I have let fear hold me back in life. I got to the point that I felt like I had no choice Healthwise. I had to do something.

Let us know when you're going, I'm happy for you. It's exciting when things fall into place!! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
