I am having my surgery on Dec. 11th in Birmingham with Dr. Clements. What did you eat for the two weeks and how did you have to eat it did you have to sip on boullion or broth. I would like details!

Are you hungry with the surgery?

Please help me understand because I am excited and scared.:omg:

I'm not sure what Dr. Clement's requirements are (all docs are different), but Dr. Miles required only one day of Clear liquids prior to surgery, then a week of clears after surgery, then a week of full liquids (purees), then two weeks of soft foods, then on to regular foods. The 8 days of clears are tough! The worst day for me was the day before surgery, because you're already anxious, then you're literally starving, too! My advice...stay busy!

The day before my surgery, I made some homemade beef and chicken stock (much better than purchased!) I froze it away in 1 c. portions to micro after surgery. Besides that, I had sugar free popsicles, sugar-free Jello, apple juice, tea and black coffee. One day mid-week, I wanted something a little different, and my hubby suggested won ton Soup. When he told the guy at the Chinese restaurant that I had just had surgery and really only needed the broth, he gave us two quarts, strained, for the price of one.

I wasn't really hungery for 2-3 days after surgery, I guess because I was sore and a little doped up!

It's much easier once you're on full liquids. I bought several different low-fat Soups and whirred them in my mini Cuisinart (you can also use a blender). I love Progresso's light clam chowder! The nurse told me that during the liquid phase, eat whenever you're hungry. Don't try to stick to just 3 meals a day, because you're just not going to get in enough calories.

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! I know it's a little scary, but it's really not that bad. This has been a wonderful experience for me, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Tami

Hello all you Alabama people! I will be having my surgery on November 13! Just a little over a week now. I am going thorugh the whole range of emotions, excited, scared, nervous, am I doing the right thing! I believe I have made an educated decision so I know in the long run I am doing the right thing.

My doctor is Dr. Miles @ Medical Center East. I have heard such wonderful things about him and the hospital! He is a very forthright person! He tells you like it is!

I am not looking forward to the liquid diet but I am sure I can make it through!

I will keep everyone posted!

Hi Lisa! Welcome to LBT. I know you're excited about next week (and a little nervous!) The liquid diet is tough, but after the first week, you get a lot more filling options. I admire you for having the guts to do this right before the holidays! I don't know about you, but I tend to gain 3-5 lbs. from T-giving to Christmas, and this year we'll be losing instead.

Best wishes!

Tami

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
