After going through extensive testing for the last 5 months they discovered a "possible" problem when I took the Upper GI. I had to go to a Specialist for another test and discovered that I have all the symptoms of acid reflux even though I never have had acid reflux. They called it "silent" acid reflux. Evidently, if you have the symptons of acid reflux you can not have the sleeve but you must have the gastric bypass. This all happened last Friday and I was to have the surgery today (Monday). I am disappointed but I am so glad they found out now instead of finding out after I had the sleeve surgery and had complications with the sleeve. Has anyone else had this problem?

Sorry to hear that. Is there no other surgeon you can go to for a second opinion? I know some will leave it up to the patient. The reflux is nothing that cannot be managed with a PPI.

Good luck with whatever you decide.smile.gif

I would not get gastric bypass for that reason. I had acid reflux too and

I have had my sleeve for 2 years. Can't you go to a different doctor?

Almost every doctor puts their patients on an acid blocker anyway.

See someone else- you should not be forced to have surgery you do not want when opinions differ For me reflux would be much preferable to the malabsorption of the bypass.

I did have a hernia and they repaired it during my surgery. I did have acid reflux, but didn't know it until I had my surgery. I was put on Nexium and I am still on it. You need to go to another doctor, it seems. The information that your current doctor is giving you is not correct. My doctor encourages the sleeve over the bypass, regardless of acid reflux. Surgery changes your body's system and conditions that you have before may improve after. Seriously, you need to seek additional advice from another surgeon.

NOT TRUE!!!

Like many others, I had horrible reflux before surgery, and have had zero since. ZERO. I had a moderate-sized hiatal hernia repaired also and I'm sure that was a major contributor, but even before surgery, whenever I ate low-carb (which is pretty standard post-op), it went away. If they want to argue about it, I'd see someone else.

I'VE NEVER HEARD THAT. Many many have acid reflux and go ahead with the surgery. And if it's a hiatel hernia they go ahead as well! I'd just go find another doctor. You've had all the tests and that should be easy for one to schedule a sleeve surgery for you! Good luck to you!

I had a Nissen Fundoplication surgery to correct GERD and they are going to take that down and do the sleeve on me. If they are willing to reverse a surgery designed to correct reflux and then do the sleeve, why wouldn't they do the sleeve on someone that has reflux? Just doesn't seem right to me.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I think I will pursue this with my surgeon and also with the Specialist. I really do want the sleeve if at all possible. Thanks again.

I guess it is that surgeons preference, or maybe he just decided the bypass would be better for u, for whatever reason/s. Im no doctor, but there may be some reality to not being sleeved with Gerd (to our benefit). Although, im going through with it, and my surgeon is well aware that I've taken all medication under the sun for Gerd. I am now taking a supposed new med, this last yr, for an erosive esophagus too (Dexilant), and I also have a hiatal hernia, soooo, I guess he has his reasons. I would talk to him again, and if he insists u still need to have the bypass, then...somethings not right. Good Luck to ya :):):)

I just got a phone call from the Specialist. He sees no reason why I can't have the sleeve surgery. He was going to contact my surgeon and let him know that he was going to clear me for the sleeve surgery. YEAH!!!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
