6 months and 150 pounds later - Half way there

Recommended Posts

I'm 6 months from my surgery now and everything is going pretty well. I've lost over 150 pounds. Of course because I started at such a high weight, I'm only half way to my goal. Weight loss was very fast at the start and has slowed down considerably. I get around 800 calories. I had hit a stall a couple of months ago when I was getting around 600 calories and increasing my intake to 800 helped with the weight loss. It might be time to up the calories again.

Overall the Sleeve has been great, there was no way I was going to loose so much weight in such a short time frame. Even more importantly, all the right habits have become ingrained in my lifestyle - what I eat, tracking, walking etc. I just don't think about it too much, its just part of my day. Even if the weight loss stays slow and I only loose a few pounds (I've gone from 30/mo to 20/mo to about 10/mo) a month I'll be perfectly content.

The difference in my quality of life is tremendous, even if I didn't loose a single more pound, I would declare the operation a success. Living in NYC, and being able to walk around and climb up the subway stairs without panting and sweating has been awesome.

Unexpected good decision: Saving all my clothes while I was gaining weight meant I haven't had to buy new clothes since I've been dropping a pant size every 2-3 weeks.

Regret: Not having the operation sooner!

That is awesome. Congratulations on your weight. I have been saving my clothes for years since I was a size 16. I can't even imagine begin that small again, but I couldn't let them go.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
