Yep so many changes for me. Sweets are now way too sweet, stuff with just a little bit of salt now tastes way overly salted. I now like several things that I did not like before too, like string cheese and bacon. Some of my old favorites I just cannot stand now.

I've heard (by heard I mean something the nurse said in the pre-op class we all had to take, LOL) that when you lose weight at a rapid pace your body burns ketones and it makes food taste differently. I'm sure I'm putting info together that doesn't all fit perfectly, but if I remember correctly, I think that's what she said. LOL!

They way food tastes and smells to me now has totally changed too. SF Jello now taste like pure salt. I did taste a little of cream cheese frosting and it was way too sweet. The smell of sausage and bacon cooking make me gag as does fried chicken. YUCK! So I totally agree with Sasicas on this. I was told by my surgeon that this is normal as many WLS patients experience this. He also told me that food that I did not like I would like. I haven experienced that yet. So everyone is different. :D

OMG!! I thought it was just me!!

I am only 2 weeks out (tomorrow) and still on full-liquids, but have noticed that some of my favorite yogurts are disgusting now. I had to throw a few of them in the trash this week. NASTY!!

Did they operate on our taste buds? :)

My husband was sleeved a year ago. To my surprise, after healing, he started almost immediately eating salad and tuna and all sorts of things he never would have eaten voluntarily before his surgery. He has told me numerous times that he just wants this "new" kind of food.... and now, a year later, he still eats salad, tuna, grilled chicken, and still no gravy!

So I think some people really do change both their tastes and their cravings--their head changes, not just the amount of food their stomach can hold. And let's not underestimate the effect that not having so much of that hormone ghrelin can have on our bodies--taste and appetite and the whole shooting match. Not having a big ol' stomach and all those ghrelin-producing tissues probably makes a difference.

Cheers to healthier eating!

Meg

I agree with Kelly. I was able to eat greek yogurt, Protein supplements, etc prior to surgery. Now, I can't stomach any of it. It's pretty frustrating because I NEED to get the Protein in.

Soon enough you will be able to get the protein through foods so I wouldn't worry about your lack of protein now. I am about 3 months post op and still not quite able to get the daily amount in but slowly am getting closer to that magic 60 grams a day. Protein drinks are just awful! I even tried putting unflavored in a smoothie like I did before and had to throw the smoothie out.

Thanks for the advice. I think I worry too much about getting all of the protein in. I need to relax.

Yep - my taste buds really changed. At first everything was way too sweet as other members mentioned. During the liquid stage this is common. I had to dilute all of my drinks.

Unfortunately this fades with time or with eating more sugar. I take a bite of pizza now (8 months out) and think ...yuck... this is what I used to dream about and chow down? Good new is now we can try all the things we used to not like and who knows, maybe new healthier foods are in your future. One of my VSG friends says everything is way to salty. Each of us are different, go out and discover the new you. Enjoy!

Oh yeah- definitely.

I had found some Protein drinks I liked before surgery and post surgery they made me gag. All that research down the tubes. Luckily I had gotten a bunch of samples and was able to scramble and find a couple that still work for me so I am fortunate in being able to get the 80 grams my doctor INSISTS I get even in the liquid phase.

Not on real food yet so it will be interesting to see what else has changed. I do notice my sense of smell is so acute now- amazing.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞
