Question for those 8 months post op or longer

Recommended Posts

Do you still take all your Vitamins? I'm currently getting a monthly B12 shot, but that's about it.

My last labs were fine.

What are your thoughts on still taking vitamins?

Thanks!

I still take my Vitamins because I am still predominately eating Proteins and I know i'm not intaking anywhere near the amounts of fruits and vegetables I used to eat. Also Calcium for my bones. My labs are also good and I do get a monthly B12 shot. I know that sometimes it takes weeks to months for deficiencies to show up and once they do it will take just as long for the levels to come back to normal.

Even healthy people take Vitamins so I will continue to do so...

I'm almost 2 years out, and I will continue to take my Vitamins. There is no way I consume all of the micro and macro nutrients and minerals in my diet. I took them before weight loss surgery, and will continue to do so. With all the "bad" stuff out there in foods, I just can't imagine not taking it. Plus, I never want to get behind the curve on Vitamin levels. Playing catch up is no fun.

Okay, I'm 7 months today, can I play? lol

Still taking. Although my last labs were near perfect, I'm slightly on the low side of normal for my Iron and my B12 was actually high, so they said cut the dose in half, so I take the B12 every other day.

Just wanted to add this little article...

http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/09312.html

I've seen it take a couple of years for deficiencies to be detected. Some programs don't do annual vitamin/mineral checks. I've had mine done every 3 months for the first year, and then every 6 months thereafter. I'll continue to have them monitored annually once I hit the 3rd year post-op. I've been high on B12 and have cut back to a sublingual every couple of days instead of daily.

Thanks all! I have been really tired lately and maybe it's because I haven't been taking my Vitamins. I will start back on my multi and calcium/D ASAP! I guess I took my labs being good for granted. I don't want to mess with having a Vitamin deficiency. YIKES!

It is definitely a good idea to take your supplements. You can start by taking half of your Multivitamin dose (if possible). I recommend this to my patients because this prevents you from producing 'expensive urine'. In other words, you will not be urinating the excess Vitamins and minerals. If you take half of the dose in the powder/tablet the other half should come from your diet. If your doctor has prescribed the full dose, then by all means take it.

Yes, sure do!!! I notice a difference in how I feel when I don't. If I forget my calcium/magnesium/potassium - I'm getting muscle cramps. If I forget my B's or D's I'm feeling really lethargic. I have to take my Vitamins and Iron too. Iron (and B-12) because I'm anemic. I just like taking my vitamins, they just make me feel good. I do also take my Omegas, but not every day. Maybe a few time per week when I remember. :)

Interesting because my surgeon has you do B12 every other day from the start.

So does mine (though it's a b-complex, not just b12).

I still take mine. My labs have been good but when I was off all the Vitamins for 2 weeks and was sick I had deficiencies. There has been a big push for all women to take a multi, Calcium and D.

I started with every day dosing, and through my losing stage my B12 levels were steady smack-dab in the middle of normal range. I hit 18 months post-op, and my B12 was on the super high normal end, and that's when we cut it back to every couple of days. I have my 2 year follow up with labs with my surgeon in June, and my labs were pulled for pregnancy at 12 weeks, and my B12 had dropped back down within normal ranges in 3 short months. So, I know that if I get super lax, I'll drop even lower on my B12 levels.

GREAT topic. I'll be 7 months on Thursday. (man that went by quick!) and I have really started to slack on my Vitamins. I will definitely put more of an effort. The only thing I do faithful is B12 every morning. But I know I need to go to Walgreens or CVS and stock back up on multi and Calcium.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
