Which Michigan VSG surgeons are the best?

Recommended Posts

I also went to Barix in Ypsi. My surgeon was Dr Poplawski. LOVE HIM and his staff. They have been there for me every step of the way, they are available to me 24/7 and as To Be Thin said, they only do WLS so they all really know what their doing and they take care of teaching you everything you need to know to be successful and provide you with a nutritionist as well. I also had BCBS and they covered my surgery 100% thankfully but my BMI was alot higher than yours.

Did you have VSG surgery? I thought Barix Clinic in Ypsi didn't do many VSGs.

Yes, I had the VSG. They are doing many these days now that it is as easily accepted as the lap band and RNY by insurance companies. In my nutritional class there was about eight of us that day and 6 were going to be sleeved.

I'm getting sleeved by Dr. Bacal at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn. My surgery date isn't until July 5th, but I can tell you from the few times I've met with him, he's a very nice guy & very knowledgeable of the various types of bariatric surgery. Also, his office staff are great. Very funny & personable, while being professional and explaining everything that's going on. So far I'm very happy with my decision and have already gave his number out to a few friends!:) I was told that BCBS is one of the easiest insurance companies to get approval from as long as it's part of your policy. I hope that's true and I haven't jinxed myself too bad by saying that!:P

Good Luck!

Wendy

Hi Debby,

Have you met with any doctors yet or visited any clinics? Read, read, read up on all the choices and doctors,,, good luck!!

No, I have not met with any doctors yet. I had contacted Barixs last fall and they seemed not to really be doing many VSG's. Who was your doctor and do you know how many VSG's he's done? Were you self-pay? If so, do you recall the total cost?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
