3 days post op....am I consuming too much?

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

I am three days post op and am feeling really, really great. Yesterday I was concerned about getting enough fluids to stay hydrated so today I worked really hard to plan my liquid intake so that I could get more fluids and more Protein in. I am easily drinking 4 oz of a Protein Drink or Water per hour and had 8 oz of protein enriched broth at lunch and dinner time. It took me 30-40 minutes to consume that much but now I'm worried......am I getting in too much at a time? I don't feel bad, have had no dumping syndrome (today) but I dont' want to have too much and cause a leak. Would love if others could let me know if that amount seems normal for 3 days post op or is it too much?

liquids run right through you and can't cause a leak. It sounds as though you don't have much swelling and can drink easily--that's good as a problem to look out for is dehydration in the days after surgery. You are doing fine, keep it up!

I can easily drink as much or more than that (Once my swelling went down on day five- before that no way). It's liquids- I don't use this period as indicative of anything- be happy that drinking is easy- it will serve you i good stead in the future. At this point I can easily get 16 ounces in in an hour- four ounces every 15 minutes.

Everything I have seen here indicates that restriction dos not become apparent until we start eating. Don't worry!

At day 3 I finally convinced the nurses to let me have popsicles and crushed ice. Other than gas, I had NO pain and the bad nausea was gone by the 3rd day. Ask if you can have a Popsicle.

But FYI- I had a very easily time getting down stage 1 liquids, I had an easy time on stage 2 full liquids, now I am on mushies and I am still have too easy a time. All I can suggest is call your doctor or their nurse practitioner and double check the oz amount and how often. Although, I was eating enough (except a small bout of trying mushies too soon )I was not eating often enough. Sowhen I check with my doctor, he said eat full liquids every 2.5 to 3 hrs 4 oz, and if I wanted to I could have 2 small spoon fulls of a mushies like, blended eggs or such. But that was MY doctor and his advise for ME. Don't be afraid to call you doctor and and ask these things, you are NOT bothering them, this is part of the experience.

I am 16 days out, insicions/scabs are gone, they look great, went to work after 12 days off, and I had no problem. Again everyone is different, and don't push it.

Best of luck,

Steven

I am the same way with the higher amounts of liquids on day 3. I thought I was drinking too much, but i seem to be doing pretty good. I know I am staying hydrated. I can feel when I have enough liquids at the time, but I also can tell when i am free to try again. My doc has on her diet sip until you feel full. If liquids go straight thru, it makes sense that the Protein takes longer to drink.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
