Insurance requirement - pre-op weight loss diet & exercise

Recommended Posts

Hi all. This is my first post and I looked through pages of threads, but didn't find a similar topic.

My insurance company requires a 3 month pre-surgical diet and exercise plan that includes a visit with a dietician, frequent face-to-face visits with my PCP, and exercise overseen by a person trained in the field. The exercise isn't a problem since I work out 6 days a week anyway and I see my doctor every other week... already lost 5 lbs in the first two weeks on Medifast! Just had the dietician visit yesterday.

I'm just hoping to hear that other people got approved after jumping through these hoops and ask what sort of paperwork you submitted to prove you completed each of these sections?

Can anybody help me sort out the details? I still need to call my insurance company to get specifics on what they require for those stipulations, but in the meantime would like to hear from others.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have read some people blog about doing things like this and they all has gotten approve. My insurance require me to do a 6 month supervised diet with the dietician, complete a Health & Behavior Assessment, with a licensed Psychologist. They are the ones who has to submit the paper work to the insurance coordinator to be submit to my insurance company and then I have to wait to be approved. I hope this help and I pray that you get approve as well.

This seems to be pretty normal, the few things I have heard are - number one make sure your insurance covers the sleeve - a few have been disappointed when they submitted and found out they didn't. And number two, make sire you discuss everything you are doing weight loss wise at your meetings, in detail. I am just passed my 4th visit, next one is June 13th. Mine I have to see my primary care Doctor.

The ladies above have definitely hit the major points, and you seem to know what is required of you and double checking to make sure with insurance. Definitely, make sure that you are recording everything with your PCP and everything is in your notes. Keep track and make copies. I am in month 3 of my 6 monthly supervised visits, and I have already met with a psychologist for my psychological evaluation. I hope to have everything ready to be submitted on August 12th with my last PCP visit.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
