I was prescribed Bactrim for a possible staph infection. (My lucky day!) These things are HUGE! I broke it in half, but now I'm worried that the sharp edges on the broken side might cause damage. Should I just suck it up and swallow a whole one next time? With my gag reflex it's very possible I will never get it down.

Another question: Some of the Soups I have been pureeing are pretty spicy (and taste DELICIOUS). I just want to take a sip of Water while I'm eating it. Is it OK to drink water with meals while I'm on a puree diet?

Whew, this whole process requires so much thought!

Hi -

I was told by my DR that if the pill could be cut or broke in half, that it was ok to do that to swollow it easier, nothing was ever mentioned about rough edges, so I am assuming it would be ok - wouldnt hurt to give your DR a call and ask though

I am still on liquids which also includes Soups - and I still will take a drink of Water if I need to, because basically I am drinking everything anyways - I try not to drink while I am eating my Soup, but if its needed, I do

Hope that helps

Try to buff down the sharp edges before you take it. If you are not going to be able to get them down whole, then you have no choice but to break them. You can't afford not to with staph.

As for sipping Water, sometimes I do it, too. I don't think I did it much with Soups and purees, but now with solid food, sometimes is just feels too dry and I have to sip. Not much, though, or I feel sick. Just enough to 'wet my whistle' so to speak!smile.gif

If a pill can be split, it can be crushed. Crush the sucker, mix it in some applesauce and down the hatch! No sense taking chances with sharp edges or even worrying about it. Crush it!! :)

The surgeon made me swallow HUGE (seriously, huge) pills after surgery and had to keep on taking them for a whole month! I really trusted him, so if he said it was ok, then I guess it really was. Unless you always had problems swallowing big pills, you shouldn't have problem after surgery either...

By the time the tablet reaches your stomach the sharp edges will be long gone. You CAN break it in half with out worrying. This med doesn't stand a chance with your new stomach!!

Let me know if you have other issues.

Me too -- I've been taking these ENORMOUS tablets (TWICE A DAY OMG) since surgery and I have to keep taking them for a full six months. They're heinous, but I can get them down usually fine. :P

Good luck kicking the infection!!

I also have been taking a pretty huge pill (a little larger than a Centrum) since the second day of surgery with no problem, But I still say a little prayer before taking them, just in case.

Good Luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
