I went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and my surgery was done by Dr. Armando Joya. I paid $10,000, which included roundtrip airfare, all pre-op testing, medication, one night in the hotel pre-op, two nights post-op, prepaid taxis for transportation. Dr. Joya's surgical assistant Dr. Espinoza came to check on me in hotel during recovery, and their nutritionist Nathalie gave me all her personal contact info for questions. I know it is a bit more and a further distance than people sometimes go, but I had a few reasons.

First, even though there are a few other Mexican surgeons that are more popular by name, Dr. Joya was right on par in that I was never able to find a negative thing about him. On the contrary, I found many accounts of people who had a great experience and who were open to emailing and chatting about their time there.

Second, I really liked the location. I knew I could do it cheaper if I went just over the border, but the resort and beach city of Puerto Vallarta is really beautiful, and it made me feel better about dragging someone along with me to know that they would be able to enjoy a really quality vacation while I recovered. Luckily I felt well enough to enjoy it too! The Krystal resort has a number of pools and is right on the ocean. It is very cheap ($20 a night) to upgrade to an ocean view room, and the restaurant was more than willing to bring me chicken broth through room service.

I have no regrets thus far - my recovery has been smooth and completely uneventful (knock on wood). I never had pain, nausea, vomiting, etc. (knock on wood again). I would recommend the experience!

I had surgery June 20th with Dr. Ramos Kelly.

I paid $5300 plus $44 for a upgraded hotel room. I went through Sandy, but Trish the other coordinator took care of me while I was there. Dr. Kelly is an awesome surgeon and I only had real pain the the first 12 hours after surgery, thankfully the nurses come in like clock-work and give you pain meds in your IV. After that I was fine and walking all around. I would do it all over in a heart beat! :)

$8750 in Almater Hospital, Mexicali, Mexico with Dr. Aceves. No nausea, vomiting, or complications. Best thing I've ever done for myself other than going to grad school.

Hi

I also had Dr. Aceves at Almater Hospital in Mexicali, Mexico. NO PROBLEMS or complications at all. I paid $8,750 too. When you want the VERY best doctor who has done more surgeries than they other doctors with NO problems please consider Dr. Aceves.

It is NOT a time to price shop around when it comes to your health. When I did my research before having WLS, I wanted a doctor who had the most experience and who had no complication--that is Dr. Aceves. I looked for who's name kept coming up and the quality of the Hospital too. I was NEVER going to go to a clinic to have WLS--I knew it was important to be in a hospital. Please check all those things out before you make a choice and learn about your doctor and the place where they do the surgery--is it just a clinic or is it a hospital--there is a big difference.

I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Aceves and his entire team of talent nurses and doctors. They are amazing. :D :D :D

I had to self-pay because my insurance plan excludes bariatric surgery. Heck, it excludes any kind of weight loss treatment.

I live in the Seattle area and paid about $21,500. Worth EVERY PENNY!

I paid $10,400 for Dr. Thomas Umbach in Las Vegas. Cheap travel ... stayed at the Golden Nugget ... had a great time and he is a VERY capable surgeon. Check him out. Inexpensive and you stay in the states. (And a bonus vacation in VEGAS, BABY!)

He is no longer doing the Spyder method as apparently the tool was not accurate/good enough. I went there because I saw your clip on the Doctors and they changed me to regular lap. surgery after I had gone through all the initial testing, paid for it, etc.

Sort of miffed that I couldnt get the Spyder... feel like they should have been confident in it before promoting it like that and *then* deciding they dont want to do it anymore ....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
